Upset-Minded Bulldogs Just Miss on Knocking Off No. 9 UNCW
09.09.2018 | Men's Soccer
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Upset-minded UNC Asheville men's soccer just missed knocking off No. 9 UNCW in a 3-2 loss in its final game of the UNCW SpringHill Suites Classic.
The scoring in the match opened in the sixth minute when Huntley Munn scored his first goal of the year for UNCW.
The Bulldogs would even things back up in the 32nd minute when Taylor Durall rebounded in a Kyle Adams shot. The goal was the first of Durall's career.
The two teams from there would go on to enter the halftime break with the score still even at 1-1.
UNCW (5-1-0) took back the lead at 2-1 in the 55th minute when Phillip Goodrum scored off a corner kick from Danny Reynolds. The goal was the third of the season for Goodrum.
UNC Asheville (1-5-0) had a great opportunity in the 59th minute to equalize, but Izaiah Vignali's shot in the six-yard box was blocked out of bounds for a corner kick.
The Seahawks would add another in the 64th minute when Emil Elveroth scored to make it 3-1. It was Elveroth's fourth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs would not go down without fighting until the very end though with the Bulldogs pulling within one at 3-2 in the 88th minute when Vignali connected on a penalty kick.
UNC Asheville finished with a 16-14 advantage in shots in the match, forcing the Seahawks to make six saves. UNCW held a narrow 8-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Taking Advantage/#ThePursuit Man of the Match
UNC Asheville's Taylor Durall took advantage of his first career start by scoring his first career goal. For his efforts, Durall was chosen as #ThePursuit Man of the Match by the coaching staff.
Second of Year
Izaiah Vignali scored his second goal of the season in the match. Vignali leads UNC Asheville on the year with five points on two goals and an assist.
Quotable
"That was about as entertaining as a college soccer game as you can hope to be a part of if you are a fan," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "It had a little bit of everything. Credit to UNCW. I thought they were a little sharper in some attacking moments. We played really well. I thought we actually played better today than we did this past Friday against College of Charleston, who ended up winning the tournament. It shows you the parity that exists in college soccer and how close we all really are.
"I thought our guys were great this afternoon. It was a good battle in moments. Some guys really stepped up. I thought Taylor Durall was very good. In his first college start he came in and battled and scored a tidy little finish. Miles Peay played in a completely different role for us today and was excellent and made a real impact on the game and drew the penalty, which Izaiah Vignali calmly slotted home. It was a good game all the way around. UNCW is a top-10 team in the country for a lot of reasons and we caused them a lot of problems and they caused us some problems too. In terms of the way this group performed, the way they battled, the quality of soccer they put on display, I was pretty pleased and I could not be prouder to be their coach. I'm very much looking forward to getting back at it and playing against a very good Appalachian State team."
