UNC Asheville-Appalachian State Mountain Rivalry Derby Ends in 1-1 Tie

09.12.2018 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It was a derby match that truly lived up to its billing with UNC Asheville men's soccer ending their mountain rivalry match after two overtimes tied with Appalachian State at 1-1 on Wednesday evening at Greenwood Field.

It was a match where both teams took 20 shots with both teams controlling the run of play at points.

Appalachian State (4-1-1) controlled the run of play for most of the first half with the Mountaineers going ahead in the third minute on a Camden Holbrook goal. The goal was Holbrook's fifth of the season.

The Bulldogs controlled the run of play for most of the second half, particularly in the final 10 minutes.

UNC Asheville (1-5-1) eventually scored the equalizer in the 83rd minute when Brendan O'Dowd blasted the ball into the back of the net. O'Dowd's rebound goal was assisted by Dante' Bova and Luiz Felipe Dantas.

The Bulldogs looked as if they would take the win in the 88th minute, but Appalachian State goalkeeper Jake Chasteen somehow kept the ball out of the back of the net. Once again, it was O'Dowd that had the opportunity, but his header off a beautiful ball to the back post by Izaiah Vignali was just saved by Chasteen.

Both teams would have quality chances in the overtime periods with Vignali almost linking up again for a goal, but the match would end in a 1-1 double overtime tie.

UNC Asheville goalkeeper Dakotah Bainter was fantastic between the pipes for the Bulldogs in the match, making six saves. Chasteen also made six saves in the match.

BULLDOG BITES
Second Straight Year
UNC Asheville and Appalachian State had to go into overtime for the second consecutive season on Wednesday night.

Quotable
"It lived up to the derby match that it is," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Honestly, it was kind of a tale of two halves. Appalachian State was much better than we were in the first half. For it to be 1-0 at halftime, it was a completely fair result. We talked and made some adjustments at halftime and reminded them what we were trying to do and full credit to our guys because they responded. We were pretty good in the second half.

"We did a great job competing tonight. I thought Dakotah Bainter was excellent tonight. He was fantastic. When it got into overtime our team was really smart about it. We had some chances, but full credit to Appalachian State because the save late in regulation by Jake Chasteen was a wonderful save. Probably based on that save and the one where he was even stretched out even longer a draw is a fair result. It was a fun match. Appalachian State is very good and you can see why they make it hard for teams to play against them. Overall, I'm pleased. It's a result at home. Obviously you would like to take three points, but for our team to show that kind of fight back and kind of turn the tide, forget about the first half and move forward, that's a real positive. I've said this all year long - I like where this team is going and I think we took another good step forward tonight and now we've got to go continue it."

#ThePursuit Man of the Match
Extremely dangerous the entire time he was on the pitch, UNC Asheville's Brendan O'Dowd was awarded #ThePursuit Man of the Match honors by the coaching staff. O'Dowd scored his first goal of the year in the match.

Up Next
UNC Asheville men's soccer will next travel to Davidson, N.C. to face Davidson of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
