Double-Double Day from Guthrie Helps Lead Bulldogs to Split on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville split its matches on the final day of the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley College of Charleston Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Match One: Davidson 3, UNC Asheville 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23)
UNC Asheville battled in all three sets in the match, but it would be Davidson that would pick up the win.
The match started with UNC Asheville pushing Davidson, but the Wildcats would hold on for the 25-23 win. After a 25-20 win for Davidson in the second set, the third set was much like the first with the Bulldogs pushing the Wildcats, but once again it would be Davidson that pulled off a narrow 25-23 win.
Cara Guthrie led the Bulldogs with a double-double in the match with 13 digs and 11 kills.
Madisen Zyburt finished with a match-high 16 digs in the match.
Kailey Hackett ended the match with 18 assists, while Carter Kennedy closed the match with 16 assists.
Julia Borges and Cecilia Stack both had two blocks in the match. Kasey West finished with two service aces for the Bulldogs.
Mason Rooney finished the match with 16 kills for Davidson.
"It was a hard-fought match and I am proud of the way we competed," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said. "We needed to be more disciplined in the important points in the match, but we are getting better with each outing. Their attitude and effort in the match was great and more of what we have been asking."
Match Two: UNC Asheville 3, The Citadel 1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-15, 25-15)
UNC Asheville put together a strong team performance in its second win of the year over The Citadel. The Asheville Bulldogs hit .302 in the match, while limiting The Citadel Bulldogs to just .189 as a team.
Two Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills with Borges leading the way with 13 kills. Guthrie collected her second double-double of the day with 15 digs and 11 kills in the win over The Citadel.
Zyburt closed the win over The Citadel with 20 digs, while Kennedy led Asheville with 26 assists. Hackett had 16 in the match. She also had four service aces.
Julia Loveday led Asheville with six blocks. Stack had five blocks in the match.
Sumerlyn Carruthers led three for The Citadel with double-digit kills with 14.
"It was a fantastic match to finish the weekend," Santos said. "Our effort was unbelievable and our girls were able to battle and again defeat a much-improved The Citadel team. I am happy for the girls today because they gave everything today."

Cara Guthrie became the latest member of the prestigious UNC Asheville 1,000-kill club on Saturday. She now has 1,013 in her career.
Digging It
Madisen Zyburt had 20 digs in the win over The Citadel. She now has five 20 or more dig performances in four-set matches in her Bulldog career. Zyburt is also closing in on 1,000 digs with 976 currently.
Second Win Over The Citadel
The UNC Asheville volleyball team also picked up a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) win over The Citadel in its second match of the Asheville Invitational at the Justice Center on Saturday, Aug. 25.
As a team, UNC Asheville finished the match hitting an impressive .359 as a team, while limiting The Citadel to a hitting percentage of .181.
Cara Guthrie led Asheville in kills in the match with 11. She had a hitting percentage of .381 in the match. Guthrie also had three digs and two service aces. Julia Borges just missed on double-digit kills with nine, while Ansley Rooks hit .583 en route to eight kills.
Madisen Zyburt finished the Asheville win with a match-high 13 digs. Kailey Hackett led Asheville with 15 assists with Carter Kennedy right behind with 13. As a team, UNC Asheville collected six service aces. The Bulldogs had six total team blocks with Cecilia Stack ending her efforts in the match with five blocks. She also had five kills.
Sharlissa De Jesus was the top performer for The Citadel in the match with 14 kills. Megan Fuhr had 26 assists for The Citadel.

UNC Asheville will play its final non-conference regular season match of the year at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the Bulldogs play host to mountain rival Western Carolina.
Since making the move to NCAA Division I, UNC Asheville owns a 23-17 advantage over the Catamounts. Last time the two met at the Justice Center on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, UNC Asheville picked up an emphatic 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) win over the Catamounts.
