Bulldogs Drop Match to College of Charleston in UNCW SpringHill Suites Classic

WILMINGTON, N.C. – It was a tight match, but it was the College of Charleston that earned a narrow 1-0 win over UNC Asheville men's soccer on Friday night at the UNCW SpringHill Suites Classic.
Both teams – and maybe even more so for the Bulldogs – had first-rate chances throughout the match, but it was the Cougars who were able to score in the 74th minute to take the narrow win. Rio Murray scored the goal for the College of Charleston (2-2-1), while Joao de Souza picked up the assist.
UNC Asheville (1-4-0) had a decided advantage in corner kicks in the match at 7-2, but College of Charleston had a slight 9-5 advantage in shots on the evening.

#ThePursuit Man of the Match
For his efforts in UNC Asheville's narrow loss to College of Charleston, the UNC Asheville coaching staff picked Joe LaCasto as #ThePursuit Man of the Match.

"We were the better team for over 50 percent of the game and we made a mistake (to lose game) and that's college soccer," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "That's really frustrating, but those are valuable lessons.
"We were excellent on set pieces tonight. That was a real positive for me. That's been a real issue and concern for us. We made some adjustments and the guys really responded to it. We'll learn from our self-inflicted wound tonight and move on. We have no other choice. Growth is painful and the process sometimes seems like there is no end in sight to the hard lessons, but the true teams will find that resilience and move forward. Our group does a great job with that and they had an awesome response after the match tonight. We are looking forward to what should be a great opportunity to play a top-notch team in UNCW on Sunday. It will be an excellent soccer game for our guys to play. Those are the games you want to play if you are a college soccer player."
