Bulldogs Battle Until Final Whistle in Narrow One-Goal Loss at Georgia State
09.04.2018 | Men's Soccer
ATLANTA – UNC Asheville men's soccer battled until the final whistle, but Georgia State was narrowly able to hold on for a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Both teams had quality chances in the first 20 minutes of the match, but neither team could find the back of the net in the early going of the match.
UNC Asheville goalkeeper Dakotah Bainter particularly came up with a huge save in the 15th minute to keep the score at 0-0. A few minutes later in the 19th minute, UNC Asheville's Izaiah Vignali almost found the back of the net, but Georgia State goalkeeper Paul Tyson was able to make the save.
Georgia State (2-2) would be able to find the back of the net a few minutes later in the 28th minute when Aris Briggs scored off an assist by Max Hemmings.
The two teams from there would go on to enter the halftime break with the Panthers still leading 1-0. That score would remain through the entire second half to give the Panthers the one-goal win.
The Bulldogs (1-3) looked as if they may tie things up in the final seconds of the match, but somehow Georgia State was able to keep the ball out of the net.
Georgia State finished with an 11-5 shot advantage in the match. The Panthers had a 6-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Bainter made three saves for the Bulldogs in the match.

#ThePursuit Man of the Match
For his strong efforts off the bench for UNC Asheville in the match, Tanner Gilliam was chosen as #ThePursuit Man of the Match by the coaching staff.
Quotable
"I thought we played pretty well," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Georgia State is a good team. It was a good game and, again, it came down to set pieces. That's kind of becoming a theme that we are going to work hard to address. Georgia State had a really well worked corner (on goal) and they did a really good job with moving players around and finding a way to score at the far post.
"I thought we were very good in the second half. I thought we had the better chances. We were probably a little unfortunate in that last flurry at the end of the match for the ball not to end up in the back of the net and earlier in the game the goalkeeper made a good save on Vignali's shot. Certainly I am not frustrated in our effort or in the way we played, but obviously we are not happy at all with the result. We played a very good Georgia State team tough."
Up Next
UNC Asheville will next travel to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the UNCW Springhill Suites Classic where they will take on two programs from the Colonial Athletic Association. The Bulldogs will first battle the College of Charleston at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 before closing out their time at the event by challenging host UNCW at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
"It's a great opportunity for us to play College of Charleston and UNCW this weekend," Mennell said. "We're looking forward to playing in UNCW's tournament and continuing to get better."
