Bulldogs Surrender Late Goal in Narrow Loss at Charleston Southern

09.29.2018 | Women's Soccer

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team surrendered a late goal, as the Bulldogs suffered a narrow 1-0 road loss to Charleston Southern on Saturday at the CSU Soccer Field.

BULLDOG BITES

How It Happened

Both teams went neck-and-neck in the first half. The two squads combined for 14 total shots with seven being on goal.

UNC Asheville had a chance at goal in the 30th and 31st minutes, as both Maura Coolbaugh and Kyra Kandel each took a shot on goal. Both attempts were saved to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.

CSU connected with a pair of shots on goal in the final six minutes of the first half, but freshman goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley saved both attempts.

After a scoreless 45 minutes, both teams came out firing in the first 13 minutes of the second half. UNC Asheville posted two shots on goal, while CSU put one on frame.

One of the best chances for the Bulldogs to score came with nine minutes remaining in regulation. Alice Walker was fouled just outside of the 18-yard box, which gave the Bulldogs a free kick in striking position. Freshman Maya Gutman took the free kick with her right foot, but the shot sailed just high of the crossbar.

Still tied at 0-0, CSU started to pepper the UNC Asheville net with five minutes remaining. The Bucs were able to break the scoreless tie in the 88th minute, as Sidney Doherty netted the game-winning goal. She was fed a through ball off a goal kick, and Doherty slipped past the UNC Asheville back line and found the left side of the net.

Down 1-0, UNC Asheville tried to tie the game late, but the Bucs fended off the attack and sealed the one-goal win.

Overall CSU took 19 shots and put ten on frame. UNC Asheville struck 12 shots and put seven on goal.

O'Malley corralled nine saves, which included five in the first half.

Gutman paced the Bulldog squad, as she took three shots with two on goal.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville returns to the friendly confines of Greenwood Field on Wednesday, Oct. 3, as the Bulldogs will entertain Gardner-Webb. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., and the Big South contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
