Gutman’s First Career Goal Gives Women’s Soccer 1-1 Tie Versus Gardner-Webb

10.03.2018 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind Maya Gutman's first career goal, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team pulled out a 1-1 tie versus Gardner-Webb on Wednesday at Greenwood Field.

The draw gave the Bulldogs a crucial point in Big South Conference play.

BULLDOG BITES

How It Happened

The contest started quickly for Gardner-Webb, as it scored the game's first goal at the 10-minute mark. Off a corner kick from Stina Kleppe, Bailey Hierholzer connected a pass to Jada Newton, who capitalized by placing the ball in the back of the net. It was her seventh goal of the season and gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the narrow 1-0 lead early.

Both squads battled back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, but Asheville had two big opportunities to score its first goal.

In the 39th minute, Gillian Oyos ripped a shot from distance, and she forced the GWU goalkeeper to deflect the shot out of harm's way.

The second opportunity came in the 41st minute, when UNC Asheville had a chance on the counter attack. Savannah Collier fed a long through ball to Ryanna Hammond on a counter. The senior transfer found possession and ripped a shot from within the 18-yard box. However Keeley Brown made the save again.

After two big missed chances to tie the game the Bulldogs went into halftime trailing, 1-0.

Midway through the second half, the Bulldogs finally found the back of the net, as Gutman netted her first career goal. Justine James worked into the attacking third, and after weaving through several Runnin' Bulldogs, she connected a pass to Gutman. The freshman from Bathesda, Md. ripped a shot from inside of the penalty box, and the shot rolled past the Gardner-Webb goalkeeper and into the left side of the net. Gutman's first career goal leveled the contest at 1-1.

GWU posted two more shots on frame in the final eight minutes, but the Bulldog defense stayed strong and forced overtime for the fourth time this season.

Gardner-Webb nearly won the game in the 96th minute when Hierholzer headed a shot off a corner kick. However the attempt hit the crossbar and sailed out of play.

Neither team had another solid look at goal, which forced a second golden-goal session.

UNC Asheville dominated the 10-minute period, but again, both teams couldn't score, which ended the contest in a 1-1 tie.

It was the fourth game this year that UNC Asheville has forced overtime, and all four contests have resulted in ties for the Bulldogs.

James tallied her first assist of the 2018 season. The assist was also just the second of her career.

As a team, UNC Asheville ripped 10 shots and put five on frame. James, Gutman and Oyos each connected with a pair of shots with all recording one attempt on frame.

Freshman goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley tallied 10 saves en route to her fourth tie this season. The 10 saves marks the third time this season she has posted double-digits in saves.

Quotable

"Tonight was a good performance overall, and I'm pleased with the result", said first-year head coach Lindsay Vera. "Once we calmed down after Gardner-Webb scored, we started connecting more as a unit, and it felt like the momentum we had against CSU carried over into tonight's game.

"Our goal was good. We were patient in the build-up and simply kept the ball moving. Maya tucked it away for us with total composure. I'm happy she was able to get her first career goal. It was certainly a physical battle, and I'm proud of the way this entire group managed the game and held their own for another 110 minutes. We'll focus on recovery now and prepare for High Point on Saturday"

What's Next?

UNC Asheville travels to High Point on Saturday, Oct. 6, as the Bulldogs square off with the Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Vert Stadium in High Point, N.C.
