Bulldogs Drop Conference Opener to Radford

09.21.2018 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville battled its way back into the match, but it was Radford that would be able to secure a 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 25-15) win over the Bulldogs in the Big South opener for both teams.

Radford (9-1, 1-0 Big South) took the first two sets in the match, but the Bulldogs responded nicely in the third set with a 25-18 victory. UNC Asheville closed out the third set hitting .306 as a team, while limiting Radford to .179.

The Highlanders would be able from there though to close out the match in the fourth set.

Julia Borges led UNC Asheville (5-6, 0-1 Big South) in the match with 11 kills. She hit an impressive .364 in the match.

On a night in which she was honored before the match for surpassing 1,000 digs in her career, Madisen Zyburt led UNC Asheville in digs. The reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week finished with 14 digs. Kasey West ended her evening with 13 digs for the Bulldogs.

Cecilia Stack finished the match with a team-best four blocks for the Bulldogs. She also had six kills.

Radford had four players with double-digit kills in its win with Stephanie Neast leading the way with 14 kills.

BULLDOG BITES

Double-Digit for Borges

UNC Asheville's Julia Borges has now collected double-digit kills in two out of the last three matches for the Bulldogs. She now has three double-digit kill performances on the 2018 season.

Quotable
"Our potential is there," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said after the match. "You saw what we can do in the third set. We held them in check at every position and everything worked. We hit over .300 and held them to .179, so I think we are there. You could make an excuse and say we have not played in a long time, but I don't think we need to make excuses. We need to do better, but that's the No. 1 team in our conference. We're going to get there."

Up Next
