2018 UNC Asheville Women's Soccer Media Guide

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – For the lone match of the weekend, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team travels to North Florida on Sunday, Aug. 26. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Ospreys is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.

About UNC Asheville

The Bulldogs enter the weekend contest with a 0-1-1 overall mark. UNC Asheville tied Wofford, 1-1, in the season opener but fell to Western Carolina, 1-0, in the second game of the season.

Senior forward Justine James has the lone goal for the Bulldogs the season, which came off a counter attack versus the Terriers. Gillian Oyos earned the assist, which was the first point of her career.

In the two games this season, many Bulldogs – 18 – have seen action this year. Of those 18, eight are freshmen – Oyos, Savannah Collier, Maya Gutman, Grace Sloan, Abby Jacobs, Alice Walker, Bronwyn Luitwieler and Courtney O'Malley.

In net, UNC Asheville has used freshmen O'Malley and Luitwieler, as each has earned a start this year. Both rookie Bulldogs have combined for 200 minutes and own a 0.90 goals against average. 

Scouting North Florida

The Ospreys enter Sunday's contest with a 0-3 mark in the 2018 season. They played two games in Charleston, S.C. and dropped both contests to College of Charleston (2-0) and The Citadel (3-2). In its most recent game – Thursday, Aug. 13 – UNF fell to Middle Tennessee in its home opener, 2-0.

North Florida was project to finish fifth in the A-SUN this year. Last season, the Ospreys went 9-6-1 overall and 3-4 in league play en route to a fifth-place finish.

Thais Reiss and Hollyn Knight both lead the Osprey offense, as each have netted a goal. Kendra Hoffman has the team's lone assist, which was off Knight's goal in the 12th minute versus The Citadel.

Rhiannon Conelley has started all three games in goal, as she has combined for 270 minutes. She has corralled 14 saves and has earned a 2.33 goals against average.

Last Time Out Versus The Ospreys

The Bulldogs and the Ospreys met last season on the pitch, and UNF left Asheville with a 2-1 overtime victory at Greenwood Field.

Courtney Naber netted the go-ahead goal in the 57 minute for the Bulldogs, but North Florida scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to force overtime. The Ospreys scored the game winner in the 96th minute to earn the victory.

In the tight head-to-head contest, Asheville out-shot North Florida, 14-11.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville will open its home portion of the 2018 schedule on Friday, Aug. 31 at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs will square off with Delaware State at 4 p.m.

The match is the first game of a doubleheader with the Bulldog men's team, as it will face USC Upstate at 6 p.m. for its home opener and Big South Conference opener.

The doubleheader will be Freshmen Night for both teams. UNC Asheville will recognize all freshmen from both squads as well as host promotional games for all UNC Asheville freshmen and students. All UNC Asheville students will receive free admission to the Friday Night Futbol doubleheader.

Also on Aug. 31, it will be Back to School Blues Night. All local elementary and middle school students, who also wear blue to the game, will receive free admission to both the UNC Asheville men's and women's contests.
