How It Happened
The Catamounts started the game quickly, as they fired five shots in the first 20 minutes. None of the WCU shots were on frame, as freshman goalkeeper Bronwyn Luitwieler watched all the attempts sail wide of the net.
Western Carolina netted the game's only goal in the 27th minute, as Eynde Frazier scored her first goal of the season.
The Bulldogs tried to respond quickly, as freshman midfielder Savannah Collier attempted a shot one minute later. However, the shot sailed wide.
To end the first half, Western Carolina put two more shots on goal, but Luitwieler, who made her first collegiate appearance, saved both shots.
Despite Western Carolina maintaining most of the possession in the second half, the Bulldogs had a solid opportunity to tie the game with 18 seconds left in regulation. Sophomore Skyler Chillson connected with a shot, but the attempt sailed just above the crossbar.
The Catamounts ran off the final seconds in regulation, which sealed the 1-0 victory for Western Carolina.
Luitwieler corralled four saves in her first game as a Bulldog, while Collier and Chillson each posted a shot.
Quotables
"We added a couple more players into the rotation today, which I think is really important. We have a long stretch of the season to go and to know that all these girls are picking up the right tactics is going to really raise the level of this team," said head coach Lindsay Vera. "Just like from Friday's game at Wofford, I am really happy with the defensive shape that we took and the patience we are keeping. These are all positive steps in the right direction.
The next step for us is to get more opportunities on the attack. We connected a couple of times today, which was significant for us. We just need to do that more often, and we are going to work on different ideas and tactics so we can move the ball and play the way we want to in the next few games."
What's Next?
The Bulldogs will take a week off, as they will travel to the Sunshine State to square off with North Florida on Sunday, Aug. 26. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
