How It Happened
The Bulldogs didn't have many opportunities to score in the first half, but Skyler Chillson had a key chance to net the game's first goal, as she found space on a counter attack. The sophomore forward went one-on-one with the Wofford goalkeeper, but the Terrier keeper made the save and deflected the shot.
Another opportunity arose in the 27th minute, as UNC Asheville was granted a free kick following a Wofford foul. Senior Bella Iorio took the free kick, and she fed a lob pass into the Terrier box. However, the Bulldogs couldn't put a head on the looping pass, as it rolled over the end line for a goal kick.
At the halftime break, the Bulldogs only had one shot to their name, while Wofford had eight. The Terriers put two of those shots on goal, and freshman goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley stopped both attempts.
The second half started slow, but in the 58th minute, James scored the game's first goal. Gillian Oyos found the ball in Asheville's half, and she connected with a through ball to let James go one-versus-one with the Wofford goalkeeper. James pushed the ball past the Terrier goalkeeper and into the bottom left side of the net.
The goal was James' first goal since her freshman campaign in 2015, and the assist for Oyos marks the first career point for the freshman.
Seventeen minutes later, Wofford tied the game at 1-1, as Eva Dailey drilled the left side of the net following a cross from Marta Izquierdo.
Both teams didn't receive another chance at goal in the final minutes, and the game went into overtime tied at 1-1.
In the 97th minute, James found another prime look at goal, but the Wofford defender made a sliding tackle to diffuse the Bulldog attack.
After the first 10-minute golden-goal overtime, the contest was still tied at one each.
In the second overtime period, Wofford took three shots in the 10-minute period. None of the attempts were on frame, so the season opener ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Terriers ended the contest out-shooting the Bulldogs 22-3, including a five-shot advantage in shots on frame (7-2).
O'Malley made six total saves, which included three in the first overtime period.
Quotable
"After the first half, we had to make a few changes, including formation. The players adapted really well to this change, and I am very happy with that," said first-year head coach Lindsay Vera. "Like I've said from the beginning, this team is very coachable. After playing two games, this team looked to be more unified, as they were willing to adapt and change to keep up with the tempo of the game."
What's Next?
The Bulldogs will take a day off and will return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 19 to face off with Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
