DAY ONE RESULTS

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Behind freshman Victor Mathuthu and three Bulldogs joining the UNC Asheville record books, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams concluded a successful first day on Wednesday at the Big South Outdoor Championships at Vert Stadium.

Highlights

To start the first day of the Big South Outdoor Championship, jumper Mathuthu led off with a new school record in the men's long jump. On his fifth jump, Mathuthu made a leap of 6.94m. The jump was 0.11m farther than the previous record, which was held by Jordan Yarbrough. Mathuthu's jump was good enough for a third-place finish and the first podium for UNC Asheville in the postseason meet.

In the women's long jump, freshman Nadiria Evans just missed on a podium, as she finished fourth in the event. However with her leap, Evans recorded a personal-best 5.50m jump, which now ranks second in the UNC Asheville record books. Her previous-best mark was 5.37m, which she set at the Appalachian State Last Chance Meet. Asia Washington finished seventh in the event, as she also set a personal-best jump of 5.41m. Her leap also moves her into the top 5 in program history, as she is now fourth in UNC Asheville's record book in the long jump.

In the first running event of the meet (women's 400m hurdles), Kayli Nichols and Heather Grober finished sixth and seventh, respectively, as both Bulldogs qualified for the finals on Friday. Nichols clocked a 1:03.52, and Grober earned a 1:04.32.

On the men's side of the 400mH, Hunter Koike posted a personal-best 54.61 time, which placed him fifth in the preliminary race. The time is now the third-fastest mark in school history. His previous-best mark was 55.32, which he set at the Western Carolina Track and Field Invitational last outdoor season.

Despite not qualifying for the finals in the women's 200m, Desire Brown broke a personal best with a 25.17. She shaved off 0.46 seconds from her previous-best mark, as she finished 11th in the event. Jailah Grimes clocked a 26.08 time, and Jasmine Cox posted a 26.25 time in the same event.

Phoebe Schneider finished in the middle of the pack in the women's 10,000m. She placed sixth with a time of 38:34.26, which is a new personal record for the senior. She shaved off nearly a full minute from her previous-best time, which she set at last year's Big South Outdoor Championships in Charleston, S.C.

To conclude the opening day of the championship meet, Dominic Collichio and Thomas Little finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the men's 10,000m. Collichio clocked a 32:14.24, while Little posted a 32:23.77.

What's Next?
