McFalling Breaks Men’s 400m School Record on Second Day of Big South Outdoor Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – For the second straight day, UNC Asheville track and field had another school record fall.
On Thursday at the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships, Tyree McFalling broke the program record in the men's 400m to pace both squads at Vert Stadium.
Highlights
To start the second day of the Outdoor Championships, Kayli Nichols posted a third-place finish in the women's 100m hurdles. The senior sprinter clocked a 14.34, which is a season-best time. Her previous season-best mark was a 14.47, which she set at the Duke Invitational. With her finish on Thursday, she qualified for the finals on Friday afternoon.
Desire Brown posted a solid finish in the women's 400m, as she placed fourth. With a 57.22 time, she earned a new season-best time. Her previous season-best mark was 59.15, so she shaved off over two seconds than her previous season-best mark.
In the highlight of the second day, McFalling posted a new school record in the men's 400m. He posted the first-ever sub-49 second time in program history with a 48.93. With the new school record, it marks the fourth consecutive week the school program record in this event has been broken. Overall, he qualified for the finals with a seventh-place finish.
His teammate, Kimani Anderson, finished 11th in the men's 400m with a time of 49.48.
After a two and a-half hour weather delay, Jailah Grimes restarted the meet for Asheville, as she competed in the women's 100m. She clocked a 12.60, which was only 0.15 seconds away from matching her personal best.
In the women's 800m, Maddie Lowe finished 13th with a 2:21.01. Her time was only 0.29 seconds away from matching a personal record.
As the lone Bulldog representative in the men's 800m, David Hager clocked a new personal best in the event. The senior posted a 1:56.84, which was nearly a second faster than his previous-best mark that he set at the Appalachian State Last Chance Meet this season.
In the women's 3000m steeplechase, Kelley Coleman nearly earned a podium in the event, as she placed fourth. The junior earned a 11:21.98 in the event on Thursday.
To conclude the second day of the meet, Sage Turner and Blanton Gillespie finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Turner posted a 9:38.58, while Gillespie clocked a 9:39.78 for a new personal-best time. His previous-best mark was 10:00.88, so he shaved off over 20 seconds from his previous personal record.
What's Next?
UNC Asheville concludes the Big South Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 11. The first event on the final day is the men's high jump and women's triple jump at noon. The first track event is the women's 4 x 100m at 4:30 p.m., and the final event of the three-day meet is the men's 4 x 400m relay at 8:25 p.m.
