05.11.2018 | Track and Field

HIGH POINT, N.C. – On the final day of the Big South Conference Outdoor Championships, four UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field records were broken on Friday at High Point.

The women's 4 x 100m relay team, men's 4 x 100m relay team, women's 100m hurdles and men's 400m records were all broken at Vert Stadium.

Highlights

To start the final day of the Big South Outdoor Championships, freshman Nadiria Evans posted the third-best leap in UNC Asheville history in the women's triple jump. Evans made a leap of 11.35m, which bested the previous third-best jump by 0.04m. Overall, the Gainesville, Fla. native finished sixth in the event.

Fellow teammate Asia Washington also joined the UNC Asheville record books, as she posted a 11.01m jump. She now owns the fifth-longest jump in program history.

After earning a podium on Wednesday, Victor Mathuthu recorded a strong jump on the men's side of the triple jump. He placed sixth with a jump of 14.27m, which was only 0.33m from matching the top-3 finisher.

In the first running event of the day, the UNC Asheville women's 4 x 100m relay squad, consisting of Washington, Jasmine Cox, Desire Brown and Jailah Grimes, broke the school record. The foursome clocked a 47.47, which broke the record by over half a second.

Not to be outmatched, the men's 4 x 100m relay team also broke the school record. Consisting of Tyree McFalling, Hunter Koike, Kimani Anderson and Mathuthu, the foursome earned a 41.82. The previous-best mark was 42.35, which the same four Bulldogs set earlier this season at the Appalachian State Last Chance Meet.

In the men's 1500m, Chilton Birdwhistell and Blanton Gillespie finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Birdwhistell clocked a 4:07.47, and Gillespie earned a 4:14.49.

Kayli Nichols nearly claimed the gold medal in the women's 100m hurdles. The senior clocked a 14.07, which bested the school record by 0.05 seconds that she owned. Her previous season-best time was 14.47, so she shaved off 0.40 seconds from that performance.

After qualifying for the 400m finals, Brown earned a third-place finish. She clocked a 56.32 time, which improves the second-best mark in program history. She previously owned the second-fastest time, but she bested that previous mark by 0.59 seconds.

For the second day in a row, McFalling broke the school record in the men's 400m. On Friday, he clocked a 48.78, which bested Thursday's preliminary time by 0.15 seconds. This marks the fifth consecutive time the program record has been broken. Overall, the sophomore finished sixth in the finals.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Nichols finished fourth in the finals. The senior clocked a 1:01.91, which was over a second and a-half faster than her preliminary round time. Her teammate Heather Grober posted a 1:04.32 in the finals. She finished sixth, as she shaved off 0.75 seconds from her preliminary time.

After improving the third-fastest time in program history in the prelims, Hunter Koike moved up to second all-time in the men's 400mH. The senior clocked a 53.34 time, which was over a second faster than his preliminary time. With his performance, he earned a third-place finish out of eight runners.

Phoebe Schneider paced UNC Asheville in the women's 5000m, as she finished 11th. She clocked a 18:50.84. Finishing 14th was Kelley Coleman, as she earned a 19:13.94.

In the men's 5000m, Dominic Collichio led the Bulldogs, as he earned a top-10 finish. He placed ninth with a time of 15:21.77. Thomas Little, David Hager and Sage Turner all finished in order for UNC Asheville. Little earned 11th place, while Hager and Turner went 12th and 13th, respectively.

Brown, Nichols, Cox and Grober earned the second-fastest time in program history in the women's 4 x 400m relay. The foursome clocked a 3:50.90. The previous second-fastest time was 3:52.88, and the foursome's previous-best mark was 3:56.36, which they earned at the Florida Relays earlier this season. The four Bulldogs just missed on a podium, as they placed fourth in the event.

In the final event of the meet, the men's 4 x 400m relay posted the third-fastest mark in program history. Between Koike, Kimani Anderson, McFalling and Robert Brenneman, they posted a 3:19.09. The time was just under a second from matching the second-best mark in UNC Asheville history. Overall, the Bulldogs placed sixth in the event.

In the team standings, UNC Asheville had a strong finish on the women's side. With 50 total points, Asheville finished sixth.

In the men's standings, the Bulldogs finished seventh with 33 total points.
