Nichols Finishes Sixth in Women’s 400m Hurdles to Pace Bulldogs on Final Day of Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – Sprinter Kayli Nichols finished sixth in the women's 400m hurdles, as the senior paced the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams at the Duke Invitational on Saturday at the Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium.
Highlights
Nichols led UNC Asheville on the final day of the two-day meet, as the senior finished sixth out of 44 runners in the women's 400mH. The Raleigh, N.C. native posted a 1:02.12 time, which was only over a second away from matching the third-place finisher.
The men's 4 x 100m relay had a strong performance, as the four Bulldogs clocked a 42.50 in the event. The time was only 0.18 seconds away from matching the program record. The time placed the foursome seventh in the event.
Victor Mathuthu rounded out the top-10 finishes for Asheville on the final day of the Duke Invitational, as he placed seventh in the men's triple jump. The freshman made a leap of 14.45m, which was only 0.14m from matching the school record that he set earlier this year at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational.
Senior Hunter Koike, who broke the record yesterday in the men's 400m, had another strong outing on Saturday. The senior clocked a 22.08 in the men's 200m, which put him 21st out of 55 highly-competitive runners. Teammates Robert Brenneman and Tyree McFalling finished 37th and 38th, respectively. Brenneman bested his previous record by 0.05 seconds by clocking a 22.66 on Saturday, and McFalling matched his personal record, as he earned a 22.67.
The men's 4 x 400m relay finished 18th, as it clocked a 3:28.27.
David Hager posted a strong time in the men's 800m with a 1:57.74. The time nearly broke a personal record, as he was only 0.05 seconds away from matching that mark.
Desire Brown finished 46th in the women's 200m with a 26.30, and Jasmine Cox placed 58th in the same event with a 26.70.
Senior distance runner Maddie Lowe also had a strong outing, as she clocked a 2:21.77 in the women's 800m.
What's Next?
The Bulldogs conclude the regular season next weekend, as the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams travel to Appalachian State to compete in the two-day ASU Last Chance Meet. The meet begins on April 27 in Boone, N.C.
