UNC Asheville Women’s Tennis Opens Big South Tournament Thursday

ROCK HILL, S.C. – UNC Asheville women's tennis will open the 2018 Big South Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 19, at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

UNC Asheville (9-10, 2-6 Big South Conference) is the seventh seed in the championship. The Bulldogs will take on second-seeded Liberty (16-8, 7-1 Big South Conference) in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 19.

The match will be the second meeting of the year for UNC Asheville and Liberty. The Flames took a 7-0 win over the Bulldogs on Friday, March 30, in Lynchburg, Va.

The Bulldogs had three players finish with over 10 wins in singles in the 2018 spring regular season. Playing mainly at No. 1 singles, Kylee Shipley led the Bulldogs with 12 wins, while Christin Louw and Emily Sidor both won 10 times in singles during the regular season. Both Shipley and Louw had four wins to lead the way in conference action.

In doubles play, UNC Asheville's No. 1 duo of Hannah Francisco and Shipley led the team with 14 wins. The 14 wins was the second-most in the conference at No. 1 doubles.

Liberty had six players finish dual match play with double-digit wins in singles with Evangeline Crist playing mainly at the fifth spot leading the team with 18 singles wins. Ashley Bongart led the Flames from No. 1 singles with 10 wins. She had 13 singles wins overall.

In doubles, Lara Soares and Maria Medina led Liberty with 15 wins with 14 of them coming at No. 2 doubles. Crist and Anna Dollar picked up 10 wins this regular season at No. 1 doubles.
