UNC Asheville Drops Series Finale at Radford

03.18.2018 | Baseball

RADFORD, Va. – One strong inning propelled Radford to a series-closing 12-5 win over UNC Asheville on Sunday, March 18, at Carter Stadium.

Despite the loss, UNC Asheville (5-14, 2-1 Big South Conference) took the series win over Radford (8-11, 1-2 Big South Conference) by claiming victory in the first two games of the series. UNC Asheville earned a 5-4 win in game one on Friday, March 16, before taking an 8-2 win in game two on Saturday, March 17.

BULLDOG BITES

Highlights

The game opened with UNC Asheville taking an early 2-0 advantage off the bat of Brandon Lankford in the top of the first inning. The inning began with Kole Harris being walked, but when Lankford came up to bat there were two outs on the board.

Lankford promptly belted a two-out home run to left-center field. The two-run home run was Lankford's team-best fifth of the season and his second in as many days. In UNC Asheville's second game win, Lankford had a solo home run in the top of the second inning.

The Highlanders would cut the Bulldog lead in half in the bottom of the third inning, but UNC Asheville would plate two more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.

The top of the fourth for the Bulldogs started with Tyler Serrichio doubling to left field. After a Radford pitching change shortly thereafter, the bases would be loaded for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville would take advantage with Andrew Friedholm capturing a bases loaded walk to collect an RBI and score Serrichio. A Harris sacrifice fly next with the bases still loaded allowed Danny Wilson to score for the Bulldogs' fourth run of the day.

The game would change in the bottom half of the fourth with Radford collecting 11 runs to take a 12-4 advantage.

The Bulldogs would get one of the runs back in the top of the sixth, but it would not be enough.

UNC Asheville finished the game with four hits with Harris, Lankford, Serrichio and Wilson each collecting a hit.

Radford had 11 hits in the game with Andrew Szamski finishing 4-for-5 to lead the way for the Highlanders.
