ASHEVILLE, N.C. – To open the outdoor season, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track & field teams travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the two-day Yellow Jacket Invitational, which begins on Friday, March 16, at the George C. Griffin Track.
Last Time Out
At the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, the Bulldogs recorded four podiums. Freshman jumper Victor Mathuthu posted two of those podiums for Asheville, as he placed second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. In those same events, the freshman shattered both of the school records, which he set earlier in the season.
The men's 4 x 400m relay team consisting of Hunter Koike, Kimani Anderson, Tyree McFalling and Matthew Harding broke the school record, as they placed third in the event. The foursome posted a 3:18.09 at the meet, which was over a second faster than the previous school record that they set earlier this season.
On the women's side of the 4 x 400m relay, Kayli Nichols, Desire Brown, Heather Grober and Jasmine Cox broke the school record in the event. They already owned the school record, but they shaved off nearly three seconds to re-write UNC Asheville's record book.
Following the conclusion of the indoor championship, Nichols and Blanton Gillespie were named to the Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Teams. Nichols was also named Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as she sports a 3.971 cumulate grade-point average as a double-major German and Political Science.
