LYNCHBURG, Va. – Behind three schools records falling and three Bulldogs standing on the podium, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams had a very successful day on Saturday at the Big South Conference Indoor Championships.
Highlights
Kamyrn DeCarmo started the meet off on a high note for the Bulldogs, as she set a career best in the women's one mile event. She posted a 5:14.90, which was 2.04 seconds faster than her previous best time.
After improving the second-fastest time in UNC Asheville history in the men's 400m on Friday, Tyree McFalling finished sixth in the finals of the same event. His teammate Kimani Anderson finished right behind him, as he posted a 50.25.
Hunter Koike continued his success at the Big South Championships, as he improved the second-best time in UNC Asheville history in the men's 60m. On Friday, he posted a 6.95 in the preliminary round, but on Saturday, he improved that time by 0.01 seconds to finish fourth in the finals. He earned five team points for Asheville, despite just missing the podium.
For the lone victory of the meet for UNC Asheville, sophomore Matthew Harding won the men's 800m. He gave Asheville 10 team points with a time of 1:51.14.
Freshman jumper Victor Mathuthu shattered the school record in the triple jump. With his record-setting 14.76m jump, he earned his second podium at the Big South Championships. The previous school record was 14.08, which he set at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational earlier in February.
In the women's 4 x 400m relay, Kayli Nichols, Desire Brown, Heather Grober and Jasmine Cox broke the second school record of the day for the Bulldogs. The foursome posted a 3:57.06 at the Chipotle Marshall Invitational earlier this month, but at the Big South Championships, they shaved off nearly three seconds (3:54.18) to re-write the record book again. The four Bulldogs finished fourth in the event and earned Asheville five team points.
Not be out-done, four Bulldogs broke the school record in the men's 4 x400m relay. Consisting of Koike, Anderson, McFalling and Harding, the foursome posted a 3:18.09, which was over a second faster than the previous school record that they set earlier this season at the Keydet Invitational.
In the women's 60m hurdles, Nichols finished sixth with a 8.95 time. She was 0.05 seconds from matching a season-best result.
Kelley Coleman and Phoebe Schneider had strong runs in the women's 3000m. Coleman placed 11th with a 10:34.50, and Schneider finished right behind her with a career-best 10:34.71.
The UNC Asheville men's team earned 47 team points, while the women's team recorded 17 team points.
