About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville is coming off a 1-2 week at Lipscomb, where the Bulldogs saw flashes of success on the diamond.
One the biggest flashes was Asheville's starting rotation - Jordan Fulbright, Greg Gasparro and Jordan Carr. The trio tossed a combined 15 innings, while scattering 11 hits, five earned runs and striking out 18 batters. Carr earned Asheville its first victory of the season, as the redshirt sophomore tossed 5.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked just one in his first appearance since the 2016 season. For his efforts, he was named the Big South Conference Starting Pitcher of the Week.
The bullpen showed signs of success, as seven different Bulldogs made at least one appearance and did not surrender a run. Eric Whitecavage, Ethan Tressler and Kole Harris all made two appearances, as they combined for six strikeouts in four innings.
Offensively, the Bulldogs used the long ball to their advantage, as they recorded four homers in the three-game series. Joe Gruszka knocked two of those, which were both leadoff home runs to start games two and three of the sereis. Jake Madole hit the first homer of the season for Asheville, and Wilson tallied his first home run of the season as well. Madole and Gruszka each recorded a pair of RBIs, and Gruszka led the team with four of UNC Asheville's 10 runs in the series.
Chris Troost averaged two hits per game, as he recorded the Bulldogs first double of the season. Between Troost and Gruszka, the duo tallied 10 hits with three going for extra bases.
Scouting the Terriers
Wofford opened its season with three tough opponents at home - Kentucky, Fordham and Dayton. The Terriers were able to salvage a game on Sunday, as they defeated Dayton, 4-2.
Like Asheville, Wofford had strong pitching performances in its first three games. Grant Byers tossed a shutout versus Dayton, and Austin Higginbotham twirled 6.0 innings, while striking out five versus Fordham. Jake Hershman and Schwaner each made an appearance last weekend, as they combined for six innings without allowing a run and striking out seven.
Offensively, Mack Nathanson started his season hot, as he tallied four hits. He recorded the team's first home run versus Dayton. Colin Davis and Cody Miller each tallied a pair of hits in the first three games of the year.
