ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's Bulldog Basketball & Alumni Weekend kicked off on Friday, Feb. 2, with the Alumni Legacy Game at Kimmel Arena.
The Alumni Legacy Game featured both legends from the UNC Asheville men's and women's basketball programs, and the event was free and open to the public. UNC Asheville fans definitely took advantage as well with a great crowd on hand to support the legends.
The Alumni Legacy Game started with UNC Asheville men's basketball coaching legend Eddie Biedenbach addressing all of the alumni along with event organizer, current Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement and former women's basketball head coach Betsy Blose.
The legends were then split into two teams coached by Biedenbach and former Bulldog associate men's basketball coach Pat Bryant.
In addition, UNC Asheville Hall of Famer Mike Gore served as the emcee for the evening to the delight of all in attendance.
The two teams played three 10-minute periods, but with so much talent on hand it was inevitable that the game was going to go to overtime. One of the two teams then won by three, but that was the least important part of a special evening at the Sherrill Center.
After the conclusion of the Alumni Legacy Game, Senior Director of Alumni Relations Elizabeth Underwood then spoke to all of the basketball alumni in attendance and then Assistant Athletics Director for Athletics Advancement/Major Gifts David Jandrew handed out special UNC Asheville bags to all of the participants.
The fun evening concluded with former Bulldog men's basketball standout Joe Barber huddling all of the participants for one final, "Go Dogs!"
Bulldog Basketball & Alumni Weekend will continue on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The first game of the men's and women's basketball doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 3, will take place inside Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m. with the women's basketball team playing host to Big South Conference rival Winthrop. The women's game will also serve as UNC Asheville's annual Play4Kay Game and it is also National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
After the conclusion of the women's game there will also be a special Alumni Zone in the atrium of the main concourse of the Sherrill Center. To gain access, all alumni must purchase an alumni ticket.
Starting at 4:30 p.m., the UNC Asheville men's basketball team will then battle Presbyterian College. During halftime, UNC Asheville will honor the 10th, 15th and 20th anniversary teams of the men's Big South championship teams of 1998, 2003 and 2008.
In addition, the day will also serve as Youth Sports Saturday for the Bulldogs and UNC Asheville athletics will also be playing host to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from the area. The Bouncing Blackhawks will be performing at halftime of the men's game as well.
The fun weekend of all things Bulldog will conclude from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at Twisted Laurel in downtown Asheville with a "Bulldog Bash."
