ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Hoping to avenge its High Point loss earlier this season, UNC Asheville women's basketball hits the road to HPU to square off with the Panthers at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, inside the Millis Center.
Last Time Out
Despite Bronaza Fitzgerald's 13th career double-double, the Bulldogs fell to Radford, 64-48, on Feb. 6 in Kimmel Arena.
Three bulldogs - Fitzgerald, Jessica Wall and Khaila Webb - scored double-digits as the trio converted on 17 of the team's 20 made field goals. They also made all six of the team's free-throws, while combining for 18 rebounds.
Fitzgerald grabbed a game-high seven defensive rebounds, as she converted on six field goals. Wall and Webb each netted 13 points, as they combined for four assists and two steals.
In total, there were five lead changes as the Bulldogs led for over 12 minutes of the contest.
The Bulldogs made 34 points in the paint, including nine points off turnovers. The Highlanders held a narrow advantage in total rebounds, 33-32, as they shot 47 percent from the field.
Road Warriors
In the last six road games (USC Upstate, Campbell, Radford, Winthrop, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb), the Bulldogs are 6-0.
UNC Asheville is averaging 68.7 points per game (ppg), while holding opponents to 57.8 ppg (+10.8 scoring margin). The Bulldogs have made 19 more field goals on 10 more field goal attempts. They are also getting to the free-throw line more often (32 more times) and have made 26 more free-throws. The Bulldogs are also averaging 6.8 more rebounds than opponents (38.5 to 31.7). They have also committed five fewer total turnovers and forced 13 more total steals during that stretch.
Also during its six-game road winning streak, Asheville is out-scoring opponents 237-183 (54 points) in the second half. In the third quarter alone, the Bulldogs have out-scored opponents by 47 points (125-78).
Scouting the Panthers
High Point enters Sunday's contest with a 14-8 overall record and an 8-3 mark in league play. In its most recent game (at Longwood, Feb. 6), the Panthers downed the Lancers, 75-39. In the last five games, HPU is 2-3 with its other win being a one-point victory at Charleston Southern.
Preseason Big South Conference Player of the Year Emma Bockrath has been solid during her junior year, as she leads the team in both points (13.0) and rebounds (6.5). She is also first on the squad in steals (49), minutes per game (31.9) and offensive rebounds (48). She is second on the team with 55 assists and 94 defensive boards. Two other Panthers are averaging over 10 points per game in Kat Harris (12.5) and Camryn Brown (10.1). Kennedy Currie is one of the Panthers' best players defensively, as she leads the team with 24 blocks and is tied for first with 142 total rebounds.
All-Time History Versus High Point
Sunday's game will mark the 51st all-time meeting between the two clubs, as HPU leads the series, 37-13. The Panthers won the earlier meeting this season in Asheville, as they are currently on a three-game winning streak over the Bulldogs.
The last time UNC Asheville defeated High Point was in the regular-season finale during the 2015-16 season (March 5 in Asheville). Four Bulldogs were in double-figures as Chatori Major paved the way with 17 points. Webb netted 14 points, as she was 5-for-6 shooting in the contest, and Fitzgerald added eight points and a rebound in the contest two years ago.
