UNC Asheville Volleyball Picks Up Eighth Straight Win to Close out Regular Season Home Schedule

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Three Bulldogs finished with double-doubles as UNC Asheville volleyball collected its eighth straight win in a 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 17-25, 25-15) Big South Conference home win over USC Upstate on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Justice Center.
UNC Asheville (14-11, 9-6 Big South) was down 20-15 in the first set before pulling within four of USC Upstate (13-17, 8-7 Big South) at 22-18 shortly thereafter. It would be all Bulldogs from there with UNC Asheville scoring the final seven points of the set to take a 25-22 win.
In the second set, UNC Asheville was forced to call a time out down 24-23. The Bulldogs responded by scoring the next three points to take a thrilling 26-24 win in the set.
The third set would see USC Upstate collect a 25-17 win, but UNC Asheville made sure to end things in four sets with a dominating 25-15 win in the fourth set. UNC Asheville hit an impressive .375 in the fourth set.
Cara Guthrie led all in the match with 25 kills to go along with 10 digs and an ace. The double-double was the ninth of the season for Guthrie.
Ansley Rooks picked up her first double-double of the 2018 season with 15 digs and 11 kills. She also had three service aces.
Julia Borges notched her second double-double of the season with 14 digs and 11 kills. She also had a block.
The reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, Grace Volk picked up her fourth double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs.
Currently leading the Big South in digs in conference play, Madisen Zyburt had another spectacular performance in the match with 21 digs.
Cecilia Stack led UNC Asheville with three blocks.
Lily Dempsey was the top performer for USC Upstate with 18 kills and 12 digs.

UNC Asheville's current eight-match winning streak is its longest winning streak since 2005. It is also the longest of the Frederico Santos era as head coach of the Bulldogs.
Home Sweet Home
UNC Asheville closed out its 2018 regular season home slate an impressive 9-3 at home. UNC Asheville has now won at least seven home matches in a single season for the last four seasons. In fact, the Bulldogs are 35-11 over the last four seasons at home.
Tied her Career-Best
Cara Guthrie's 25 kills in the win over USC Upstate tied her career high. The 25 kills by Guthrie were also a UNC Asheville 2018 single-match season-best.
Season-Best and Career-Best
Grace Volk's 46 assists were a team single-match season-best and it was a also a career-best for the UNC Asheville freshman.
Moving On Up
UNC Asheville's win over USC Upstate allowed the Bulldogs to solidify a spot in the Big South Tournament and take over sole possession of fourth place in the league standings. Cara Guthrie already has surpassed 1,000 kills in her career earlier this season, but she is nearing joining the ultra-exclusive club of those with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. After the win over USC Upstate, Guthrie now has 999 digs in her career. Guthrie, who currently has 1,227 kills, would become just the 12th in UNC Asheville volleyball history to have over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.
