UNC Asheville Battles But Drops League Match at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills in UNC Asheville's 3-1 (25-18, 27-25, 11-25, 30-28) Big South Conference loss at USC Upstate.
After dropping the first two sets, UNC Asheville (6-10, 1-5 Big South Conference) battled back in the match with a dominant 25-11 third set win over USC Upstate (7-14, 3-4 Big South Conference). The Bulldogs hit an impressive .387 in the third set win.
The two teams battled back and forth in the fourth set with USC Upstate narrowly securing a 30-28 in the set to take the overall match victory.
UNC Asheville's Cara Guthrie picked up a double-double in the match with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also had two aces.
Ansley Rooks finished the narrow loss to the Spartans with 13 kills and seven digs, while Julia Borges collected 11 kills for UNC Asheville in the match.
Kailey Hackett (23 assists) and Carter Kennedy (21 assists) set up the Bulldog attack in the match. Hackett just missed on a double-double of her own, as she finished with nine digs. Kennedy ended the match with seven digs.
Three Bulldogs including Guthrie finished with double-digit digs with Madisen Zyburt leading the way with 25 digs. Kasey West ended her evening with 16 digs for the Bulldogs.
Cecilia Stack led UNC Asheville with five blocks in the match.
Emily Russell led USC Upstate in the match with 15 kills.

Cara Guthrie now has four double-doubles on the 2018 season. A Bulldog has now picked up a double-double in back-to-back matches after Kailey Hackett finished with 22 assists and 11 digs in UNC Asheville's match with Winthrop this past weekend.

Kasey West's 16 digs in the match at USC Upstate were her career-best for the Bulldogs.

"We can take a lot of positives from this performance," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said. "Our team showed fight and resilience in this match. We played an awesome third set and had a good lead in the fourth set, but made some mental errors that cost us the set and the match. We will keep working that's for sure."
