Bulldogs Drop Match on Saturday to Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball battled, but Winthrop was able to pick up a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 14-25, 25-19) Big South victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Justice Center.
The Eagles collected hard-fought victories in the first and second sets, but the third set was all Bulldogs with UNC Asheville collecting a 25-14 victory. The two teams would battle back and forth in the fourth set, but Winthrop secured a 25-19 win to take the match.
UNC Asheville (6-9, 1-4 Big South) was led in the match by Cara Guthrie, who just missed on a double-double with 12 kills and eight digs. Julia Borges just missed on double-digit kills with nine.
Three Bulldogs finished with double-digit digs with Madisen Zyburt leading UNC Asheville with 24 digs. Kailey Hackett had 11 digs, while Julia Loveday had 10 digs. Loveday and Borges led UNC Asheville with five blocks each.
Hackett paced the Bulldogs with 22 assists, while Carter Kennedy had 13 for UNC Asheville.
Lourdes Rosario led a trio of Eagles (9-10, 5-2 Big South) with double-digit kills with 16.
BULLDOG BITES
Over 900
UNC Asheville's Cara Guthrie surpassed 900 digs in her career in the match with Winthrop. She now has 905 digs and 1,074 kills in her career.

"Obviously our team showed that we can play," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said after the match. "We showed what we can do in a super-close match. If a couple of things go different in set one and even set two, I think it turns the tide in our favor. I think in set three we came out and made a no-contest out of the match. They even had to put different people in to try and compete. Again, we've got a lot of work to do, and our team is ready to do what is required. They also know there are no gimmes in this conference. We've got to come out and be ready every day for the match."
