Bulldogs Collect Impressive League Road Sweep at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Double-doubles from Cara Guthrie, Julia Borges and Grace Volk helped propel UNC Asheville volleyball to a 3-0 (29-27, 25-23, 25-12) Big South road victory over Winthrop on Friday, Oct. 26.
The Bulldogs' first road conference win was the third straight for UNC Asheville (9-11, 4-6 Big South) overall.
The first set saw UNC Asheville battle to a narrow 29-27 win over Winthrop (11-12, 7-4 Big South). In the second set, UNC Asheville and Winthrop would once again battle back and forth, but UNC Asheville would secure a 25-23 win.
The third set was all UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs hit .303 as a team in the set en route to a dominating 25-12 win over Winthrop in the set that allowed the Bulldogs to take the sweep.
Guthrie finished with 15 kills and 14 digs in the win over Winthrop, while Borges had 10 kills and 10 digs.
In total, four Bulldogs had double-digit digs in the match with the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week in Madisen Zyburt collecting a match-high 21 digs.
Grace Volk paced the Bulldogs with 29 assists to go along with 12 digs.
Julia Loveday finished the win over Winthrop with eight blocks. Borges had seven blocks.
Makayla Doyle led Winthrop in its loss with 10 kills.

Cara Guthrie picked up her third consecutive double-double and seventh of the season in UNC Asheville's win over Winthrop. Grace Volk picked up her second straight and second of the season in the Bulldog win, while Julia Borges collected her first of the year in the win over Winthrop. Borges nearly collected a triple-double in the win as she also had seven blocks.
Nearing 1,000 Digs
Cara Guthrie already has surpassed 1,000 kills in her career earlier this season, but she is nearing joining the ultra-exclusive club of those with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. After the win over Winthrop, Guthrie now has 959 digs in her career.
Digging Three-Set Matches
Madisen Zyburt picked up her second 20 or more dig performance in a three-set match in UNC Asheville's win over Winthrop.
Bulldog Block Party
UNC Asheville's Julia Loveday set the year single-match best for the Bulldogs for the second consecutive match with her eight blocks in the win over Winthrop.

"It was a fantastic performance for us that shows what we are capable of," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said after the match. "We played a back and forth first set and led the second, but got into some trouble before ending the set well. The third set we were determined to finish and complete the performance. I am proud of the way the team performed and happy for our players. They deserve this."
