ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville's women's tennis team opened up their fall campaign by hosting the second WNC Mountain Challenge with solid performances on the opening day.
UNC Asheville proudly is hosting Kennesaw State University, Western Carolina University and USC Upstate at the blue home courts of Asheville for the dual-match-formatted, WNC Mountain Challenge.
Day one started off with doubles play where juniors Kylee Shipley and Hannah Francisco paired up to best the No. 1 duos from Kennesaw Sate, 6-3, and USC Upstate, 6-2, before going into singles play. Shipley continued playing impressive tennis and won a thrilling match against Western Carolina's No. 1, Lauren Strickland, 6-3, 6-7, 10-5.
Junior Christin Louw and sophomore Emily Sidor paired up for a great start at the tournament, winning both of their doubles matches against the No. 2 duos from Kennesaw State and USC Upstate. In singles play, Louw fought back after losing her second set, winning the deciding tiebreaker, 10-5, against Western Carolina's No. 4, Lauren McCall, while Sidor came back from 0-5 in the first set, winning 7-5, 6-2, against No. 5 Carli Deehr.
Sophomore Lauren Watson-Steele had a strong start of the tournament with dominant tennis at No. 2 singles, beating Western Carolina's Savannah Taranto, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Anastasia Horvat opened her first collegiate tennis match by winning 7-5, 6-4, against Kennesaw State's Elle Baker. Horvat will look to continue her strong collegiate tennis career start tomorrow as the tournament continues.
