ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sporting a 3-1 record in the 2017 season, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team will look to continue its early success as the Bulldogs host UAB on Sunday at Greenwood Field with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
BULLDOG BITES
Promotion for Sunday
The UNC Asheville Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is hosting Back To School Day. With a valid I.D. from an elementary or middle school, students, faculty and staff will receive free admission to Sunday's match versus the Blazers.
In addition, the school with the most representatives will receive a prize pack to a future UNC Asheville men's basketball game for the 2017-18 season.
About UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs enter the weekend 3-1, which is the best start to a season since 2015 where they went 7-2 in the first nine matches.
Asheville concluded the month of August going 3-1, which makes the team 14-4 in August since 2013.
Caroline Houser tallied an assist on the game-opening goal at Jacksonville, which made her the Bulldogs' all-time career leader in assists.
On Monday, Courtney Naber earned her second straight Big South Attacking Player of the Week honor, which was the first time a Bulldog has garnered this award in back-to-back weeks.
Asheville has out-scored opponents 7-5 this season with Naber leading the squad with four goals. Zoe Lewis tallied her second career goal at Jacksonville, and Skyler Chillson and Alison Kurucz have each found the back of the net this season.
Scouting UAB
The Blazers come to Asheville sporting a 4-1 record including a 3-1 mark in road contests. They pulled out an impressive 1-0 victory at home versus Georgia State to open the season, and the Blazers nearly took a match at Memphis. However, UAB fell 2-1 in double overtime. UAB rebounded yesterday as it nipped Furman 3-2 in double overtime.
Like the Bulldogs, the Blazers are no strangers to overtime as they have played two straight matches in overtime and have gone 1-1 in such games.
UNC Asheville and UAB have only met once on the pitch, which was last season where the Blazers won 4-1 in Birmingham, Ala.
The Blazers have out-scored their opponents 13-5 where they have three players that have netted a trio of goals – Betsy Ornelas, Rachel Green and Megan Hudgens. Caroline Kehrer is the final Blazer who has posted a multi-goal season through five games (two goals).
Kelsey Daugherty has started all five matches between the posts and sports a 0.94 goals against average while toting a 0.839 save percentage and two shutouts. The junior from Kennesaw, Ga. has three games this season where she has made at least five saves including a season-high seven saves versus the Panthers.
