BULLDOG BITES
How It Happened
Within the first 12 minutes, Asheville had two shots on goal. The best chance came in the 12th minute when Caroline Houser drilled a shot, but the UAB goalkeeper stopped the ball between her legs to keep the score level early.
For the next 20 minutes, the two teams each took one shot with Asheville's being on frame. However, the Blazers had a golden opportunity to open the match as Caroline Kehrer had beaten the Asheville goalkeeper, but her shot went right to sophomore defender Taylor Barber who earned the team save as she deflected the ball away from the Bulldog net.
Each team exchanged a shot to end the half, but neither attempt found the net.
The Blazers only needed four minutes in the second half to score the game's first goal as Jamiera Lunsford drilled a shot past the UNC Asheville goalkeeper to make it a 1-0 match at the 48th minute.
The Bulldogs quickly responded as they put a cross into the box, and the UAB centre-back tried to clear the ball out of harm's way. However, the ball fell behind the Blazer goalkeeper and found the back of the net to even the match at 1-1.
Courtney Naber nearly kept her three-match, goal-scoring streak alive in the 68th minute as she took a shot within the 18-yard box. The attempt hit the crossbar and fell straight down, but the ball didn't cross the goal line to keep the match tied.
Asheville kept increasing the pressure in the second half, but for their fourth straight match, the Bulldogs were heading to overtime.
The Bulldogs took four shots in a span of four minutes in the first overtime, and Skyler Chillson had the best look. However, the freshman's attempt was saved by the diving UAB goalkeeper.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first 10-minute, golden-goal period, neither team could put the match away as UAB took the only shot in the second overtime, and it went high in the 107th minute.
After playing 110 minutes, both teams settled for a draw, which moves UNC Asheville to 3-1-1 overall and UAB to 4-1-1 on the year.
The last time Asheville ended in a tie was in 2014 at Presbyterian where the Bulldogs and Blue Hose ended in a 2-2 draw after 110 minutes. In the last seven seasons, UNC Asheville has only played to five ties.
What's Next
UNC Asheville will take six days off, and then the Bulldogs will travel to Kennesaw State on Sept. 10 for a 1 p.m. match inside Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
