Baseball Falls 10-3 to Charleston Southern in Opening Game of Series

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell behind early Friday evening against Charleston Southern and never fully recovered as the Bulldogs dropped the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series 10-3 to the Buccaneers at Greenwood Field.
Charleston Southern (15-13, 4-6 Big South) struck quickly in the top of the first, plating five runs off five hits, including a three-run home run.
The Bulldogs (12-17, 3-4 Big South) were able to rebound slightly in the bottom of the frame as Danny Wilson drove in Joe Tietjen for a single run off a single to left field. Earlier in the inning, Tietjen moved into sole possession of sixth all-time for stolen bases as he swiped his 14th base of the season and 37th of his career.
The Buccaneers canceled out the slight gain in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly that scored another run. The Bucs scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and capped the game with one run in the ninth.
In the bottom of the second, Andrew Friedholm ripped a double to right-center field, scoring Brandon Lankford and, in the bottom of the third, Wilson knocked his third home run of the season to cap the Bulldogs' scoring.
Tietjen, Wilson, Lankford and Carmine Pagano all collected multiple hits in the game. Wilson led the way with a 3-for-4 performance that included two runs batted in and the one run scored off his homer. Tietjen not only moved up a spot in the record book for stolen bases, but also moved into a tie for 10th all-time for career triples when he legged out three bases in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Brandon Harris (3-3) was the pitcher of record for UNC Asheville as he pitched the first frame. Harris and fellow freshmen Blake Brown and Kole Harris combined to strike out eight batters. Brandon Harris had three strikeouts, Brown three and Kole Harris had two.
Nik Constantakos (3-1) claimed the win on the mound for Charleston Southern, pitching five innings that saw him give up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out nine batters.

MOVING ON UP: Senior center fielder Joe Tietjen swiped his 14th stolen base of the season Friday night. The stolen base was the 37th of his career, moving him into sole possession of sixth all-time in the category. He is now just one stolen base away from fifth.
BREAKING INTO THE TOP-10: When Joe Tietjen ripped his sixth career triple Friday night, it moved him into a tie for 10th all-time in program history in the category. It was the third triple of the season for Tietjen and he is now tied with teammate Tanner Bush and three former Bulldogs for the 10th-most triples in a career.
WILSON BATTING IN RUNS: Danny Wilson had a pair of RBIs Friday night, including his third home run of the season. The pair of runs batted in gives him 52 in just one and a half seasons of play.
TOMORROW'S PITCHERS: UNC Asheville will send freshman southpaw Greg Gasparro to the mound Saturday afternoon to start the second game of the series with the Bucs. Charleston Southern will turn to right-hander Kyle Dyson.
BLUE OUT FOR AUTISM SPEAKS: UNC Asheville athletics and the UNC Asheville chapter of Alpha Xi Delta sorority have joined forces and are asking all fans to wear blue Saturday for a Blue Out in honor of the Autism Speak Foundation. Members of Alpha Xi Delta will be in attendance and will be accepting donations for the foundation.
