Charleston Southern Defeats Bulldogs 19-3 Saturday to Claim Series

04.08.2017 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Charleston Southern scored 13 runs between the sixth and seventh innings to claim the second game of this weekend's three-game Big South Conference series over the UNC Asheville baseball team. The Buccaneers' 19-3 win at Greenwood Field handed the Bucs the series win over the Bulldogs.

Charleston Southern (16-13, 5-6 Big South) and UNC Asheville (12-18, 3-5 Big South) traded two-run half innings to start the game off with a bang. In the bottom of the first, with the Bulldogs trailing 2-0, Brandon Lankford smashed a single to left field, driving in Joe Tietjen and Kyle Carruthers. Both Tietjen and Carruthers singled to lead off the frame.

After Charleston Southern went up 6-2 off three runs in the second and one run in the fourth, Tietjen drove in Carmine Pagano with a single to right-center field, but that was all the scoring the Bulldogs could muster.

The sixth and seventh innings proved to be the Bulldogs' undoing as the Bucs notched three home runs between the two innings, including two grand slams.

Tietjen led the way at the plate for Asheville, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in.

Greg Gasparro (2-2), who entered the game having pitched 15 consecutive scoreless innings, was saddled with the loss. The freshman southpaw went 5.0 innings, striking out six batters, before giving way to Jesse Juday, Kole Harris, Austin Fahr, Nick Boyles and Eric Whitecavage.

Kyle Dyson got the start for Charleston Southern but pitched just 4.0 innings en route to earning a no-decision on the day. Cody Maw (2-2) claimed the win on the mound for the Bucs.

UP NEXT
UNC Asheville and Charleston Southern close out the three-game series on Sunday, April 9. The series finale will get started with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

QUOTABLES
"The beauty of baseball is that momentum can swing quickly because of starting pitching. We need to keep CSU off the board early to give our offense a chance to perform. We can't be playing catch-up tomorrow. We can still salvage the weekend with a good game tomorrow." – Scott Friedholm
