Bulldogs Bow Out of Big South Tournament With Semifinal Loss to Winthrop

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Â The UNC Asheville women's tennis team saw their season come to an end when the No. 1 seeded Winthrop Eagles defeated the Bulldogs, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Conference Championship on Saturday, April 22, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The afternoon began with Winthrop winning the doubles competition to claim an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs' No. 1 duo of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley fell to 12-7 on the season by dropping a 6-4 decision to Megan Kauffman and Lauren Proctor. On Court No. 2, Hunter Hall and Lauren Watson-Steele were defeated 6-0 by Caitlin Cridland and Alisa Soloveva. Play on Court No. 3 was left unfinished as the Eagles had already seized the doubles point.
Singles play began with the Bulldogs' No. 1 seeded Francisco losing to Proctor, 6-1, 6-1. Asheville's No. 2 Watson-Steele was then topped by Soloveva, 6-1, 6-2. The Winthrop Eagles clinched the match at 4-0 when Asheville's No. 3 Shipley was beaten by Cridland, 6-1, 6-3. Play on Courts No. 4-6 were left unfinished as Winthrop had already clinched the victory.
BULLDOG BITES
FINISHING STRONG: Sophomore Christin Louw closed out the regular-season very effectively. After her victory last time out, Louw finished the regular-season on a four-match winning streak heading into the Big South Championships. Louw started the win streak by topping the then No. 58th-ranked Winthrop Eagles' No. 6 Alya Mourad in straight sets on March 22. Louw's match today was left unfinished as the Eagles had already clinched the match.
WEEKLY AWARDS: Kylee Shipley was named the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the week and Emily Sidor was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for the second time this season for their performances in matches played Feb. 27-March 6.
FOCUSED FRESHMAN: Despite dropping her match last time out, freshman Emily Sidor has had a stellar start to her collegiate career, finishing 8-6 in singles play on the regular-season. Sidor's match today was left unfinished.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Sophomore Kylee Shipley has shown her resiliency this year as 11 of her 21 matches have gone a full three sets. Shipley finishes the season not only 14-7 in singles play, but 8-3 in matches that have gone the full three sets.
