Bulldogs Best Gardner-Webb to Advance to Big South Semifinals

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -Â The UNC Asheville women's tennis team defeated the No. 4 seeded Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Conference Championship on Saturday, April 21, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The afternoon began with Asheville winning the doubles competition to claim an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs' No. 1 duo of Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley improved to 12-6 on the season after a dominant 6-1 route over Sandra Bolstad and Mary Walker Mixon. On Court No. 2, Hunter Hall and Lauren Watson-Steele fell 6-2 to Sarah Rieckmann and Catherine White. Court No. 3 saw the Bulldogs' Christin Louw and Emily Sidor top Daniela Naupari and Miljana Ristic, 7-6 (1), to clinch the doubles point for Asheville.
Singles play began with the Bulldogs' No. 1 seeded Francisco completing a 6-0, 6-0, clean sweep over Bolstad. No. 3 Shipley extended the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 when she downed Naupari, 6-4, 7-5. On Court No. 5, Hall fell to White, 6-3, 6-4. The No. 6 slotted Amalie Davidsen clinched the match with her thrilling 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, victory over Mixon. Play on Courts No. 2 and 4 were left unfinished as Asheville had already clinched the match.
BULLDOG BITES
PHENOMENAL FRANCISCO: Sophomore Hannah Francisco had a tremendous day with dominant performances in both doubles and singles play. Alongside Kylee Shipley, the pair won at No. 1 doubles 6-1. Francisco then went on to play as perfect of a match as one could, sweeping her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 1 singles court.
FINISHING STRONG: Sophomore Christin Louw closed out the regular-season very effectively. After her victory last time out, Louw finished the regular-season on a four-match winning streak heading into the Big South Championships. Louw started the win streak by topping the then No. 58th-ranked Winthrop Eagles' No. 6 Alya Mourad in straight sets on March 22. Louw's match today was left unfinished as the Bulldogs had already clinched the match.
WEEKLY AWARDS: Kylee Shipley was named the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the week and Emily Sidor was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for the second time this season for their performances in matches played Feb. 27-March 6.
FOCUSED FRESHMAN: Despite dropping her match last time out, freshman Emily Sidor has had a stellar start to her collegiate career, finishing 8-6 in singles play on the regular-season.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Sophomore Kylee Shipley has shown her resiliency this year as 11 of her 20 matches have gone a full three sets. Shipley is not only 14-6 on the season in singles play, but 8-3 in matches that have gone the full three sets.

With their victory today, the No. 5 seeded Bulldogs will go on to face the No. 1 seeded Winthrop Eagles on Saturday, April 22, in the semifinals of the tournament with a start time of 9Â a.m.
