Women's Tennis Opens Big South Championship Friday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -Â The UNC Asheville women's tennis team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to compete in the Big South Women's Tennis Conference Championship which lasts from April 20-23. The No. 5 seeded Bulldogs will meet the No. 4 seed, the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Saturday, April 21, with a start time of 12 p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
BULLDOG BITES
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB: The Runnin' Bulldogs finished the season with a 12-5 overall record and a 5-3 conference record. Gardner-Webb was an impressive 9-2 at home, yet only .500 on the road with a 3-3 record away from home. Asheville and Gardner-Webb met on March 9 with the Runnin' Bulldogs prevailing, 4-3.
FINISHING STRONG: Sophomore Christin Louw closed out the regular-season very effectively. After her victory last time out, Louw finished the regular-season on a four-match winning streak heading into the Big South Championships. Louw started the win streak by topping the then No. 58th-ranked Winthrop Eagles' No. 6 Alya Mourad in straight sets on March 22.
WEEKLY AWARDS: Kylee Shipley was named the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the week and Emily Sidor was named the Come Ready Nutrition Big South Conference Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for the second time this season for their performances in matches played Feb. 27-March 6.
FOCUSED FRESHMAN: Despite dropping her match last time out, freshman Emily Sidor has had a stellar start to her collegiate career, finishing 8-6 in singles play on the regular-season.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Sophomore Kylee Shipley has shown her resiliency this year as 11 of her 19 matches have gone a full three sets. Shipley is not only 13-6 on the season in singles play, but 8-3 in matches that have gone the full three sets.
UP NEXTÂ
The winner of the tomorrow's match will go on to face the winner of Match two between the No. 1Â seeded Winthrop Eagles and No. 8 seeded Longwood Lancers on Saturday, April 22 in the semifinals of the tournament with a start time of 9Â a.m.
