Huge Run in the Second Half Propels UNC Asheville to 20-Point Win Over Wofford

11.26.2017 | Men's Basketball

Highlights

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A 26-2 run by UNC Asheville men's basketball over a roughly six-minute stretch in the second half allowed the Bulldogs to pick up an impressive 85-65 non-conference home win over Wofford on Sunday, Nov. 26, at Kimmel Arena.

It was a four-point Bulldog lead at the halftime break at 33-29, but Asheville took things over in the opening minutes of the second half.

The score would be 51-45 with 13:24 to play in the contest, but that is when the Bulldogs went on their incredibly impressive run behind the three ball.

UNC Asheville guard MaCio Teague was particularly strong during the eventual 26-2 run that gave the Bulldogs a 77-47 lead with 7:05 left in the contest. He knocked down four of his five three-pointers in the second half during the Bulldog run.

Ahmad Thomas' thunderous fast-break dunk off an assist from Teague put the punctuation mark on the long run with the 7:05 remaining.

The Bulldogs (4-2) would coast to the 20-point win from there with the Bulldogs outscoring Wofford (3-4), 52-36, in total in the second half.

Teague led four Bulldogs in double figures in the second half with 19 points on the five second half three-pointers. He was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the game. Teague also had eight assists, four rebounds and one steal.

Thomas finished just behind Teague with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He also had three rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block.

Jonathan Baehre and Raekwon Miller both closed out their days with 12 points each for the Bulldogs. Baehre knocked down a career-best three triples in the game to go along with five rebounds, one block and one steal.

Miller connected on two three-pointers en route to the 12 points. He also had six rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block.

Fletcher Magee of Wofford led the Terriers in their losing effort with a game-high 20 points.

UNC Asheville as a team closed out its big win shooting 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the field overall. The Bulldogs shot a scorching 70 percent (21-of-30) in the second half as a team, which included shooting 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from beyond the arc in the second stanza. The Bulldogs shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from beyond the arc in the game in total.

Wofford closed out the loss to the Bulldogs shooting 46 percent (23-of-50). The Terriers shot 47.1 percent (8-of-17) as a team from beyond the arc.

BULLDOG BITES

1,000-Point Scorer

UNC Asheville senior guard Kevin Vannatta scored eight points in the win over Wofford to become the 33rd member of the prestigious 1,000-point club. Vannatta now has 1,001 career points as a Bulldog.

1,000 Points, 500 Rebounds and Now 200 Steals
Senior guard Ahmad Thomas' two steals in the win over Wofford allowed him to join a very exclusive list in the Big South. Thomas now with 201 career steals, 1,176 points and 554 rebounds is just one of six in Big South Conference history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 200 steals. He is also now one of only three in Bulldog history to collect 200 or more steals, joining Andre Smith (1999-03, 223) and J.P. Primm (2008-12, 248).

Home Sweet Home
UNC Asheville's win over Wofford was its 12th straight home win. UNC Asheville is now 71-16 all-time at Kimmel Arena, including 48-10 in Big South Conference contests.

Win in No. 25
Sunday's win against Wofford came in the 25th all-time meeting between UNC Asheville and Wofford. The two had not met since the 2009-10 season. UNC Asheville now owns a 17-8 all-time series lead. The 20-point win over Wofford was UNC Asheville's first in the series since 1996.

Assisting on the Big Win
MaCio Teague's eight assists in the win over Wofford was a career-best. It eclipsed his previous best mark of seven in last year's thrilling 79-77 overtime win at Coastal Carolina.
