Bulldogs Fall In Season Opener at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In the 2017-18 season opener for UNC Asheville women's basketball, the Bulldogs fell 62-52 on the road at the Ramsey Center. Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection Khaila Webb led the Bulldogs with 12 points, and junior Kelli Fisher joined her teammate with a double-digit performance (10 points).

Game Highlights

Webb knocked down five shots while Fisher went 4-for-7 from the field to lead the Bulldogs. The pair also combined to go a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe as they were the only Bulldogs that didn't miss a free throw attempt. Webb and Fisher also pooled 10 rebounds as Fisher corralled six individually.

Sophomore junior college transfer Juliet Esadah paced the team with nine rebounds in 21 minutes of play. Jessica Wall and Alexis Toney each made three baskets in the season opener with Wall totaling nine points as all three shots were three pointers.

True freshman Amaryah Corpening totaled the most minutes out of the Bulldog freshmen trio with 19 minutes. Nadiria Evans clocked 10 minutes and led the freshmen class with four total points in the season opener.

As a team, the Bulldogs dominated in second chance points as they totaled 20 compared to Western Carolina's eight points.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as they held a two-point advantage after the first quarter. However, the Catamounts doubled the Bulldogs in the second quarter as Western Carolina out-scored Asheville 18-9 in the second quarter. Despite being down 29-22 at halftime, Asheville pulled within four points (40-36) heading into the final 10 minutes. UNC Asheville recorded 16 points in the final 10 minutes, but WCU tallied 22 points to solidify the 62-52 win­.

The win for Western Carolina (1-1) marked its first win of the season after it lost to Davidson in the season and home opener on Friday (70-58). The Bulldogs fall to 0-1 on the year as they prepare for their second game of the season on Wednesday at N.C. State at 7 p.m.

What's Next?

The Bulldogs travel to in-state and ACC foe N.C. State on Nov. 15 as UNC Asheville squares off with the Wolfpack at 7 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
