ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team opens its regular season with a trip to Western Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 12 with tipoff set for 2 p.m. inside the Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, N.C.
BULLDOG BITES
About UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs lost a pair of starters last season, but they countered by welcoming four newcomers – Nadiria Evans, Amaryah Corpening, Tamiah Lewis and Juliet Esadah. Of the three starters returning from last year, Bronaza Fitzgerald and Khaila Webb are the two lone seniors on the 2017-18 roster. UNC Asheville returns a plethora of upperclassmen as there are eight in total, which includes six juniors.
At the Big South Media Day, the Bulldogs were selected to finish fifth, despite receiving the second-highest amount of first-place votes in the league. Radford earned seven of the total first-place votes as the Highlanders were selected the win the league.
The Bulldogs have a tough schedule this year including a challenging Big South Conference slate. Asheville plays 11 non-conference games including six of those inside Kimmel Arena. The highlight of the schedule is a road contest at N.C. State on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of the 2016-17 season, the Wolfpack was ranked 17th in the country.
The regular season home opener is scheduled for Nov. 18 as the Bulldogs host Charlotte for a 2 p.m. start. UNC Asheville opens its conference portion of the schedule on Jan. 2 at Campbell followed by the conference home opener on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. versus High Point.
Scouting Western Carolina
Western Carolina already kicked off its season as it hosted Davidson on Friday, and the Wildcats downed the Catamounts 70-58 inside the Ramsey Center. Sherae Bonner recorded eight points along with five assists and nine boards, and Tembre Moates was the only Catamount in double-figures as she knocked down 10 points versus Davidson.
Western Carolina finished the 2016-17 campaign with an 8-22 overall record including a 6-7 mark at home. Playing out of the Southern Conference, the Catamounts held a 3-11 record in league play as they posted wins over Furman, Wofford and UNCG last season. Also in 2016-17, the Catamounts played six Big South opponents during the non-conference slate including UNC Asheville. They went 2-4 in such games as WCU defeated High Point and Charleston Southern at home.
Last year, Raziyah Farrington led the team in scoring (10.3 points per game) as she played in all 30 games, and right behind her was Bonner who averaged 10.1 points.
As a team, the Catamounts shot .365 percent from the field last season while opponents shot .420 percent. WCU allowed 67.2 points per game while only averaging 56.6 points. However, the Catamounts had a solid defense as it averaged 7.2 steals per game while holding opponents to a three-point percentage of .299.
