Bulldogs Drop Conference Match to Liberty
10.07.2017 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville outshot Liberty in the second half, but a strong first half allowed Liberty to pick up a 4-0 win over the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field on Saturday, Oct. 7.
Liberty (7-3-1, 3-1-0 Big South Conference) collected all four of its goals in the first half with Big South Preseason Attacking Player of the Year Tresor Mbuyu leading the Flames with two goals and an assist.
The second half as noted would be a completely different story with the Bulldogs controlling the run of play for the entire half, but nevertheless still not being able to find a goal.
UNC Asheville (1-11-0, 0-4-0 Big South Conference) forced Liberty goalkeeper James Knoebel to make two diving saves in the second half. Both times it looked as if the Bulldogs were going to find their opening goal of the match, but Knoebel was up to the task.
Overall, Liberty outshot the Bulldogs, 16-9, in the match. Liberty held a narrow 7-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

"I was really pleased with the way we played in the second half. The first half was a microcosm of our season. Our team sheet was right, the tactics were right, the guys understood and we then continually made it so difficult on ourselves. To gift them four goals, that's literally an impossible task in our sport. I hope our guys understand that we're a good team and we have a lot of positives, but the margin for error is so slim in a competitive conference like the Big South and you cannot gift the other team goals, especially at home." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
