Bulldogs Fall in Overtime to Appalachian State in Mountain Derby
10.10.2017 | Men's Soccer
BOONE, N.C. – It was a match that definitely looked to be going the way of the Bulldogs, but in the end it was Appalachian State that took a 1-0 overtime win over UNC Asheville on Tuesday evening at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
Appalachian State (4-5-3) scored the lone goal of the match in the 100th-minute when John Walrath netted the game-winning goal for the Mountaineers. UNC Asheville (1-12-0) goalkeeper Nabil Milani had originally saved a Felix Kollmannthaler shot just before, but Walrath scored the putback at the 99:09 mark in the first overtime to give the Mountaineers the narrow win.
Overall in the match, Appalachian State outshot the Bulldogs, 13-6. The Mountaineers had a slight 8-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Quotable
"I couldn't be prouder of the effort of my guys tonight to come and play a difficult team like Appalachian State on the road. Our approach was great, our commitment was great, but soccer is a cruel game and sometimes the better team does not always win. It's incredibly harsh to not get a result. Full credit to App, but in terms of expectation and commitment from my team, the guys were great tonight. I know they are bitterly upset in the loss, but I told them after the match that if we replicate tonight we will win a lot of soccer matches the rest of the year. Right now, obviously our main focus is our remaining Big South matches and trying to put ourselves in a position to win a Big South title as that is ultimately the goal. Again, soccer is a funny game, but I was super-pleased with our guys tonight. We'll continue to work on being a little sharper in front of goal, and that's the next step for us in converting those chances." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
