**Story and behind-the-scenes insight from day two of the event from senior Amalie Davidsen**
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Day two has been a long day.
Anastasia Horvat is eating her dinner leftovers sitting in what looks like a really comfortable position– surprisingly, not doing homework. Ana did well again today; she stayed undefeated as she outlasted a tall and strong Liberty player, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. It is incredible to witness how quick she has adapted being a Divison 1 student-athlete, and I can already tell she is going to grow even more as a tennis player throughout her career at UNC Asheville – only the sky is the limit, and even though she is (our) "little" (one), she is not afraid to reach for the stars.
Rain equals delays, which equals very long days. Today the rain came. It did not really come as a surprise, the fog and increased humidity made it clear it was just a matter of time before the Wake Forest outdoor courts would be soaking wet. When tennis courts are wet, tennis becomes a very unsafe sport to play; therefore, all the matches were moved indoors, which made the planned time schedule a bit stretched. We ended up leaving the courts at 8:45 p.m. after the last match, around 13 hours after we started our warmup this morning. Delay is a part of the charm of tennis. There is no race with time, so you will rarely get far with predictions.
What many people around the world of tennis would probably not have predicted was that Kylee Shipley and Hannah Francisco would beat a talented duo from University of Virginia, 8-7 (8), after being down with three match points – but they sure did. This is a huge win for the program, but also for UNC Asheville athletics – UVA is ranked top-30 in America and reaches the NCAA tournament almost every year. Coach Lise Gregory always emphasizes how equal respect is important, which means not giving higher ranked teams or players too much credit, as well as never underestimate a team or a player. Today Hannah and Kylee took the task into their own hands and ended up winning.
Sophomore Emily Sidor continued her great weekend and stayed undefeated, beating a solid player from Richmond, 6-3, 6-2. Emily has worked on staying aggressive with her movement, and her hard work has reflected in her success on the tennis court, dictating the points by staying close to the baseline and taking the ball on the rise. By moving more into the court she takes time away from her opponent and give herself more opportunities to be aggressive.
Tomorrow is going to be the final day of the tournament. The rain is most likely to be continued, therefore all matches are moved indoors, which guarantees a long day at the Wake Forest courts. It is going to be tough matches, but we are all healthy and in good shape, and thanks to Coach Gregory, we are fully loaded on snacks and Subway. Good night!
