UNC Asheville Picks Up Huge Road League Win at Winthrop
10.25.2017 | Men's Soccer
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's soccer team picked up a huge 1-0 road Big South Conference win at Winthrop on Wednesday, Oct. 25.
Both teams finished the first half with seven shots each. The Bulldogs (2-14-0, 1-5-0 Big South Conference) just missed on taking a 1-0 lead at the halftime break with Dante Bova's header off a beautiful ball into the box by Joe LaCasto just going wide right to leave the score at 0-0 at intermission.
It would not take long for the Bulldogs to take the lead over Winthrop (3-11-1, 1-5-0 Big South Conference) in the second half with Colin Daughtry taking advantage of a Bova assist to give UNC Asheville the 1-0 advantage in the 46th-minute. Daughtry's flick into the open net in the first minute of the second half gave the freshman from Raleigh, N.C. the first goal of his Bulldog career.
The game-winning goal would prove to be all UNC Asheville would need in their first Big South win of the 2017 season.
UNC Asheville goalkeeper Nabil Milani made four saves in collecting his first career clean sheet between the pipes.
The Bulldogs and Eagles both finished the match with 12 shots each. Both teams had four shots on frame in the game.
Winthrop held a 7-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match.

"I thought overall we had a good performance, and obviously it's always great to take three points on the road. One of the things that we continue to talk with the group about is to put together that complete 90-minute performance and I thought tonight there were some times that we absorbed pressure for sure. I thought we were the better side tonight and I thought the result was deserved. Quite frankly, I thought we had chances after the first goal to get the second goal and kind of put the game to bed. Again though, goalscoring has kind of been one of our issues all year, so we didn't do as good of a job in those moments as we should have, but that's a part of the learning process. I told our group afterwards that this group is a good team, but for whatever reason we've found challenging ways to hurt ourselves during games, and tonight we did not do that and that was pretty positive. The nice thing now is that we move into Senior Night against a very talented Campbell team on Saturday and that thread that we are hanging on (for spot in Big South Tournament) is still alive, so hopefully we can continue to take care of our business and have the results fall our way. Certainly, we are pleased with the win tonight, but I'm not surprised because I think we're a good team and tonight we put together a performance we had been looking for." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
