Bulldogs Narrowly Fall in Double Overtime on Senior Day to Campbell
10.29.2017 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – On a snowy afternoon, Campbell narrowly escaped UNC Asheville's upset advances with a 2-1 win in double overtime at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (2-15-0, 1-6-0 Big South Conference) controlled things in the match and looked to be heading to at the least their second straight positive result, but a Camel penalty kick in the 109th-minute by Bastien Oberli garnered Campbell (9-6-3, 5-2-1 Big South Conference) the narrow win.
It was UNC Asheville that arrived on the scoreboard first in the contest with Zack Compton scoring in the 11th-minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. The goal was beautifully executed by Asheville with Kyle Adams' header finding Dante Bova's head for a flick on to Compton that he headed into the back of the net.
The score would remain 1-0 in favor of Asheville until the 38th-minute when JJ Donnelly scored off a Travis Gonzalez assist.
The two teams from there would remain tied at 1-1 until the Oberli goal in the 109th-minute.
The Bulldogs had the better of the chances up until that point with Asheville narrowly missing multiple times. UNC Asheville goalkeeper Nabil Milani made a tremendous diving save in the second half as well to keep the game even at 1-1.
UNC Asheville overall outshot the Camels, 26-11. The Bulldogs had a commanding 10-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

"Obviously, we are really gutted by the result. I thought we did everything to get all three points today. Full credit to Campbell. They did what they had to do, but soccer is a cruel game sometimes. We did really well in a lot of facets. I was really proud for our seniors and for them to play the way that they did and to put on that kind of performance. To see our team battle for them and to play really attractive soccer was really great. It was tough in the second half as we were going against the wind, but we found a way to play, and that was great. Not a lot of teams are able to do that. I thought we had a lot of great performances, and, again, it's very disappointing to lose in overtime, especially on a penalty kick, but we had chances to win it. We outshot them, we had more corners than they did and we created the better of the chances. I thought we were the better side today, and it's a little disappointing, but I'm certainly proud of a lot of the things that we did and we'll look forward to finishing the season on a high note against Presbyterian." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
