How It Happened
Prior to the match, UNC Asheville honored and recognized seven graduating seniors on the team – Emma Houser, Caroline Houser, Zoe Lewis, Courtney Naber, Brooke Miller, Katie Tuorto and Gretchen Dettlinger.
Following the festivities, the Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with a gritty Flames squad on Saturday as it was level for most of the match. UNC Asheville even took a pair of shots that would have been on frame in the third minute as Emma Houser and Skyler Chillson each took a shot early in the match.
Asheville goalkeeper Bryson Lee made a pair of saves as Liberty retaliated with two shots on frame in the 11th and 20th minute.
After a back-and-forth battle between the 25th and 38th minute, neither team was able to get a shot off in the 13-minute span. Caroline Houser broke the drought as she drilled her first shot of the match, but it was blocked by a Flame defender.
The Bulldogs were confident going into halftime as the match was level at 0-0. Asheville struck three shots, and all would have been on goal if they were not blocked by the opposition.
Beginning at the 55th minute, it was another battle as neither team could find an edge until the 68th minute. Freshman Chillson struck a shot on frame, which forced the Liberty goalkeeper to make her first save of the match.
With seven minutes remaining in regulation and tied 0-0, the Flames found a gap and took advantage in the 83rd minute. Gabriella Farrell scored her third goal of the season as she scored on a counterattack and gave her team the first goal of the game.
The Bulldogs attempted to retaliate in the 86th minute when Houser took a shot on frame, but the Liberty goalkeeper corralled the attempt.
Liberty doubled its lead moments later as Isabella Habuda netted her sixth goal of the year after she beat the UNC Asheville goalkeeper in a one-versus-one situation with just over four minutes left in regulation.
UNC Asheville held most of the possession late in the final minutes as it took a pair of corners in the 87th minute, but the Bulldog offense could not find the back of the net.
The Bulldogs drop to 6-10-1 overall and 2-6 in the Big South Conference, and Liberty advances to 9-6-3 overall and 7-1-1 in the league.
