10.24.2017 | Women's Soccer

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – In one of the most exciting matches of the season, the UNC Asheville women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday at Gardner-Webb as Asheville concludes its season with a 6-10-2 overall record.

BULLDOG BITES

How It Happened

The match was a battle at midfield for the first 22 minutes. UNC Asheville tallied its first shot in the 23rd minute when senior forward Caroline Houser put a shot on frame.

From the 26th-30th minute, the Bulldogs unleashed at the Gardner-Webb goal as they tallied five shots with three being saved and two being blocked. Courtney Naber struck three of those shots including one being on goal.

Gardner-Webb cleaned up its defense and limited the Bulldogs to only one shot on goal for the rest of the first half.

Going into halftime, UNC Asheville was out-shooting Gardner-Webb 7-2 including 5-1 on frame.

Straight out of the half, Asheville kept attacking the goal, and it paid off in the 54th minute when Emma Houser found the net. With Asheville attacking, GWU was able to clear the ball, but the clearance found the foot of senior defender Katie Tuorto in Gardner-Webb's half. She placed the ball into the Runnin' Bulldogs' box, and after taking a bounce, Emma Houser put a head on the ball to put the shot over the GWU goalkeeper and gave Asheville the 1-0 lead. The goal was the midfielder's eighth goal of her career at UNC Asheville.

The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly leveled the match as Samuelle Grove fed a cross into the UNC Asheville box. Annie Ross came running into the middle of the penalty area and guided the ball into the net to make it a 1-1 game.

The Bulldogs didn't surrender as they kept attacking the Gardner-Webb net as they recorded 13 total shots in the second half including putting five on frame. One of the best chances for Asheville came in the 88th minute when junior defender Maura Coolbaugh took a shot from distance, but the attempt drilled the crossbar.

All tied at 1-1, it was the fifth overtime match for the Bulldogs and the fourth overtime game for the Runnin' Bulldogs this season.

UNC Asheville earned a corner kick in the 93rd minute, and after bouncing around in the box, Emma Houser took a shot. However, the attempt rolled just past the left post and out of harm's way.
Gardner-Webb put a late scare with seconds remaining in the first overtime, but the Runnin' Bulldog forward was called offside.

In the second overtime period, Gardner-Webb saw its best chance to end the game after Grove was given a through pass in the 106th minute. She raced past the Asheville backline and forced the rookie Asheville goalkeeper Bryson Lee in a one-versus-one situation. The freshman goalkeeper made a terrific diving save to keep the score tied t 1-1.

UNC Asheville nor Gardner-Webb was able to see another open chance at goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Despite picking up a point, the Bulldogs found themselves one point away from making it into the Big South Tournament.

UNC Asheville finished the season in 9th place in the Big South with a 6-10-2 overall record and a 2-6-1 Big South mark. Gardner-Webb ends its regular season 4-11-3 and 2-4-3 in the Big South.
