Women's Tennis Picked Fifth in Big South Conference Preseason Poll

01.11.2017 | Women's Tennis

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville women's tennis team was voted to finish fifth in the 2017 Big South Conference preseason poll, announced earlier today by the conference office. Radford was tied with the Bulldogs for fifth with 37 points.

Winthrop was picked first in the preseason poll, receiving seven of the 10 first place votes and a total of 79 points, followed by Liberty, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Asheville and Radford, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and then Longwood.

"I don't pay too much attention to preseason polls," UNC Asheville women's tennis head coach Lise Gregory said. "We are capable of winning a lot of matches in the Big South but have to focus on our own stuff' first. If we can take care of that, I think we have a pretty good chance this season."

Seven lettermen return from last year's club that finished with an 8-10 overall record in 2016.  Three of the returnees are upperclassmen, featuring two seniors in Caroline Sherrer and Hunter Hall as well as junior Amalie Davidsen.

Asheville's squad also features two newcomers in freshmen Lauren Watson Steele and Emily Sidor. Steele is a graduate from Stratton Upper School and comes from Cambridgeshire, England.  Sidor is a graduate of Rockledge High School in Rockledge, Fla.

The Bulldogs open the 2017 season at home this Saturday, Jan. 15, against Lenoir-Rhyne at the Asheville Racquet Club, beginning at 3 p.m. Following the match against Lenoir-Rhyne, Asheville will have three more home contests in the month of January before hitting the road to face the University of North Carolina on Feb. 4.
