CHARLESTON, S.C. – A three-run eighth inning gave visiting UNC Asheville some breathing room in what had been a tight game as the Bulldogs scored in each of the last three innings and grabbed a 7-1 win in their series opener at Charleston Southern on Friday night.

THE TURNING POINT

Starter Jordan Fulbright turned in eight solid innings – the third time he has done that this season – and struck out six Charleston Southern batters in the win. Fulbright allowed just one hit through the first four innings and ended his night with a bases loaded strikeout to shut down the CSU comeback attempt in the bottom of the eighth inning.

NOTABLES

-The Bulldogs finished with nine hits, led by a three-hit game from Lucas Owens, while Danny Wilson added two hits. Carmine Pagano drove in two RBI while Owens and Wilson each drove in a run.

-Fulbright earned his third victory of the season with his eight inning, four hit performance, allowing the only CSU run in the fifth while striking out six batters and walking just three.

-Asheville jumped on the board in the top of the second inning when Joe Tietjen walked and scored on Wilson's RBI single back up the middle. The game remained that way until the bottom of the fifth, as the hosts used a one-out safety squeeze to knot the game.

-The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the top of the seventh when Pagano scampered home on a two-out bases loaded wild pitch from CSU. Asheville used three walks and a single to set up the bases loaded situation.

-Back-to-back leadoff singles by Erik Connolly and Justin Woods to open the eighth set up Pagano's two-run double down the left field line to give the Bulldogs breathing room before Owens added to the advantage with his RBI single to bring home Pagano later in the frame.

-Asheville was handed its final two runs of the night via a two-out throwing error in the top of the ninth that plated Tietjen (who reached on an earlier error) and Woods, who had reached on a walk.

UP NEXT

-Following tonight's win, the Bulldogs and Charleston Southern continue the weekend series with a 4:00 p.m. Saturday start before Sunday's 2:00 p.m. series finale.
