ASHEVILLE, N.C. –The UNC Asheville women's golf team will tee off for the final time this fall at the Big South Preview in Ninety Six, S.C. The Bulldogs will play 18 holes on Saturday, November 5, and  18 holes on Sunday, November 6. Asheville will take on the 6,083 yard course at the Patriot Club. The two-day tournament will feature six teams.
The Patriot, named in honor of the area's revolutionary war heritage, is a classically-styled course built without moving much dirt or "forcing" holes where they didn't naturally belong. The back nine, especially from hole #13, represents what the game is really all about. The land dedicated to The Patriot was perfectly suited for course design. The rolling topography and mixture of pines and mature hardwoods make it ideally suited for golf. Â
One of the most memorable features of The Patriot is a large-scale recreation of an earthen star fort like those commonly used for protection during Colonial times. The fort was designed and constructed at the center of the course, with holes #1 and #10 playing away from atop the outer walls and hole #18 returning to a green situated in the center. The fort creates separation in a tight space for three holes and a practice area, but more significantly, it reminds us of the era that shaped our country.
NOTABLES
-At the Bill-Berg Invitational, Janie Thomas scored the best for the Bulldogs over the three days of play shooting 15 over par through 54 holes. Thomas finished with a total score of 231 (74, 77, 80).
-The Big South Preview will be the fifth tournament in program history and the first Conference challenge.
QUOTABLES
"We have had a great couple weeks of practice and I am looking forward to finishing our fall season on a strong note. The Patriot Club is a challenging layout with greens that are protected by bunkers. We need to focus on solid iron play in order to score well." -Head Coach Bre Hall
UP NEXT
-Following competition in South Carolina, the Bulldogs will have a break between seasons before they travel to Fernandina Beach, FL to compete in the Amelia Island Collegiate beginning on February 20 at the Amelia National Golf Club.
