Women's Tennis Recaps Their Fall Season

11.30.2016 | Women's Tennis

ASHEVILLE, N.C.--The UNC Asheville women's tennis team can look back at the fall season, competing in three tournaments, sending two players to Regionals, as well as adding Lauren Watson-Steele to the roster, with strength and faith.  Going into the regular season, when Floridian Emily Sidor will join the team and add more depth to the Bulldog roster, the team can reflect upon a solid off-semester of hard work and good results.

In late August, the team went to Western Carolina University to compete against Kennesaw State, Western Carolina, and USC Upstate in the Mountain Challenge. Playing in the top three singles draws, Hannah Francisco, Kylee Shipley, and Christin Louw went undefeated and won their respective flights. In doubles, three of the four teams were brand new but Asheville was nevertheless victorious in over 60% of their doubles matches.

After competing at WCU, the team went back to the practice court, working hard on technique, strategy and fitness before going into the second fall tournament at Georgia Southern University competing against girls from GSU, SCAD, TROY and  Savannah State.  Overall, the team had good results with the highlight being Sophomore Kylee Shipley reaching the semi-final of the top singles flight with wins against SCAD and GSU.  Shipley and Hannah Francisco also won three of their four doubles matches.  The team gained confidence competing at GSU and were able to see the improvements made since the WCU tournament.

Toward the end of fall season, the team travelled to South Carolina to compete at the Wofford Terrier Invitational, the last fall tournament for seniors Hunter Hall and Caroline Sherrer. In the White Draw, Hall won her first singles match before falling to Kalli Karass of Wofford, 6-2 4-6 8-10 in a hard fought match. In the College Draw, Sherrer convincingly won her third match, 6-1 6-2 against Claire Chase of Gardner Webb, after falling to Radford's Karli Pope in a dramatic three set match.  Freshman Lauren Watson-Steele found strength competing in the Gray draw, beating Maria Khomchenko from a strong Coastal Carolina team, 6-2 6-3, before falling to Curran Carver of Wofford.   Along with other wins, Sophmore Madeline Finley gained a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 10- 8 win over Nicole Gilner, GSU.  The doubles teams had a last chance to make adjustments and did well overall.  Hall/Davidsen won their first match 6-2 and their third match 7-5 while Finley/Sherrer won their first match, 6-3 before convincingly winning their second match 6-0.

The UNC Asheville Women's Tennis Team are now preparing for final exams and will train on their own until the start of the spring semester.  They are looking forward to their home opener against Lenoir Rhyne University on Saturday, Jan 14th of 2017, at 3pm, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
