ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's tennis team has competed in a pair of fall tournaments, with positive results from both veterans and newcomers.
The Bulldogs opened the fall at the Elon Invitational in early September, finishing with a combined team record of 7-9 in the singles draws and a 5-5 total team record in the doubles brackets.
Freshman Kylee Shipley turned in the best individual performance for Asheville at Elon, finishing her bracket tied for third after the final match for third place was not played. Shipley lost her opening round match in three sets, but rebounded with three consecutive victories to close her weekend.
In doubles play, the freshmen pair of Christin Louw and Hannah Francisco also finished in a tie for third, losing their opening match before responding with an 8-6 victory over Big South foe Liberty. Louw and Francisco also added a second 8-6 victory, this time over Winthrop, in an extra match outside of bracketed play.
Asheville continued to see great individual play and doubles play at the USC Upstate Open in mid-September. As a team, the Bulldogs finished with a combined record of 5-11 in the singles draws and 4-6 in the doubles brackets.
Senior Lauren Brooker finished with the best Asheville performance in singles play, notching a third place finish in her bracket. After losing her opening match, Brooker responded with a pair of victories to end her weekend.
Doubles play saw Francisco and Louw continue to play well, as the duo finished second in their flight, including victories over Big South opponents Gardner-Webb and Campbell. The doubles team of Caroline Sherrer and Amalie Davidsen finished third in their bracket, grabbing a victory over Big South foe Presbyterian as well as a win over USC Upstate.
Asheville concludes fall play in late October when they travel to compete at the Wofford Classic.
