Bulldogs Grab Midweek Victory Over ETSU

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team grabbed its first home victory of the season with a 8-6 midweek win over East Tennessee State University on Wednesday afternoon as the Bulldogs racked up 14 total hits.
The Bulldogs (5-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and got a solid start from freshman Jordan Fullbright, who earned his second win of the year. Fullbright tossed five innings, allowing just one run and six hits in his first collegiate start.
Offensively, eight different Bulldogs recorded at least one hit off of ETSU (7-3) pitchers, as Pete Guy led the Asheville attack with a 3-for-4 afternoon from the plate while driving in one RBI. Four different Bulldogs collected two hits, with Joe Tietjen bringing in a pair of RBIs.
Lucas Owens and Kyle Towles each drove in an RBI as part of their two-hit days, as Asheville also got a two-hit performance from Hunter Bryant and a pinch-hit RBI single from Joe Zayatz.
The two teams combined to collect nine extra-base hits, including five Bulldog doubles and a triple by Tietjen.
Asheville jumped on the board first with three consecutive RBI hits, beginning with Towles' single up the middle, followed by Guy's double into the left-center field gap and capped by Tietjen's triple to right-center field.
The hosts added two more runs in the second on a passed ball and Owens' RBI double to chase ETSU starter Dalton Long (0-1), who allowed five runs one four hits in his 1 1/3 innings of work.
ETSU added a single run in the fourth via and RBI double before Asheville answered in the fifth with a two-out run of their own. The teams each plated two runs in their halves of the seventh inning, with ETSU scoring on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly before the Bulldogs used an RBI double by Tietjen and Zayatz's pinch-hit single to score their two runs.
The visitors pushed across three runs in the top of the ninth and had the tying runner at the plate in the ninth before Nick Schavone closed out the game and earned his second save of the season.
Asheville is back in action with a home series this weekend against LaSalle at Greenwood Field beginning with a Friday afternoon game with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
